Opinions on 1973 Tartan 46/48

I am considering purchasing a 1973 Tartan 46. This model boat was designed by Sparkman and Stephens and built by Tartan marine from 1972 to 1974. Apparently there was at least one boat of this type that has circumnavigated. It is my understanding that the there was a also Tartan 48 model that was very similar to the 46 (the 48 had a slightly different stern configuration).

Does anybody have any experience with this model Tartan? I am especially interested in build quality and sailing characteristics.

Thanks!

Kate

Look like a great design anyway. Protected rudder. Nice layout.

Re: Opinions on 1973 Tartan 46/48

Kate- I have a Tartan 43 (1974) which is the little sister of the 46/48. The 43 is the traditional transom version of the more popular Tartan 41 (84 of the 41/43/44) series were built. Several are still racing in the Newport /Bermuda and Marion to Bermuda races. One was in the '79 Fasnet race The build quality is generally very good & strong. I have been to Bermuda (from Ct) and to carib and back. I do my own work (including new engine). I replaced one small bulkhead where a babystay chainplate had leaked. Some water in deck problems have been fixed.
I have seen several of the 41's that were raced hard and put away wet. I wouldn't take those examples offshore without some serious work that would not be the best investment of time or money. What are your plans for the boat? By the way the boat should sail like a witch upwind (a 7'7") draft. The #1 genoa will be huge. The S & S boats from the 70's were great upwind boats and conservative in design compared to newer race boats from the 80's & 90's. I would want a serious survey. Engine replacement & water in cored deck would be potential repairs/improvements. Is this the 46 that's up in Ontario? There was on in Washington for sale a year or 2 ago. Feel free to contact me. Tim

If you are looking for a Tartan designed by Sparkman and Stephens, the Tartan 37 is an excellent boat. They built 486 of them, easy to single hand. Most of them had the centerboard keel with draft of 4ft 2in then 7 ft 11 with the board down. They have a good owner support network also at Tartan 37 association. The size of the sails on the 37 are about 60% less than on the 46. No big deal if you have lots of crew. Sleeps the same number of people and the same number of heads. Just tossing it out there. Sorry I am a tad late with this reply (ten years) and hope you have many miles on your new boat whatever it is and wherever you are. Just saw your post and thought someone else might benefit. We bought our 1973 S&S designed Tartan 48 Cape St. James (hull # 007) capestjames.blogspot.com, in 1993, sailed it around the world 1997-1999 and have been cruising Alaska for the last 12 years. We love the boat. Goes to weather as if it actually likes it . Off the wind it tracks just fine even under spinnaker (although we don’t use it much I’ve had the chute up in 17 knots true and it was finger tip control, nothing exciting). The boat is well built and strong. Great live aboard too.
