Why is he doing this , I can see absolutley no benefit other than inflating this person ego which by the look of it is larger than the boat. No doubt when he gets into trouble he will be calling for help putting others at risk. Where does it stop

It could use a swim platform.
I do like that all lines lead to the cockpit and the head is close by.

I can't imagine wanting to do it, but for what it is, his boat is pretty well thought out. Glad to see he has AIS so at least he won't be a navigational hazard for others.

Re: No joke - man preparing to sail across the Atlantic on a 42 inch yacht
While this is totally a gimmick, I respect his right to give it a try. That said, there are plenty of more meaningful challenges in sailing that he could undertake if he wanted to be the "first" or whatever at something.
The seas around the Canaries can be pretty rough, particularly just after departure. I think his statement "It was the worst, most unpredictable and erratic conditions I have ever sailed in with that boat." makes it pretty clear that he doesn't have a lot of offshore experience.
I also think he's a bit of a fool for leaving in April, which is late for even a standard boat. He's going to be sailing right into the teeth of hurricane territory and season, poking along at 2 knots. Bewildering.

Kent estimated his crossing time at some three months, so Undaunted cannot be fixed in time to avoid the hurricane season this year. He therefore plans to postpone his next attempt until the autumn.

He is probably better prepared than many others.
I assume you are an Ozzie and know the story about the ozzie guy who drove his Jeep "halfsafe" across the Atlantic.

Re: No joke - man preparing to sail across the Atlantic on a 42 inch yacht
I notice in the article he states it has a "long keel"
The technical details are interesting and it would be great to hear more. Any solutions that work on a vessel with so little space must be inventive.
I guess we will never get a satisfactory answer to the more fundamental "why" question. Still I wish him luck.

Short is best on boats!
But that's the person, not the boat. God bless him...

Re: No joke - man preparing to sail across the Atlantic on a 42 inch yacht
Not to be picky, but I just looked it up in Timothy Leary's book of boating terms and it says that a vessel has to be a minimum of 44 1/2 inches to be called a yacht.

And, come to think of it, with all the stuff on the stern they will probably put him in a 55" slip when he gets across. Good luck
