Newer or older?

I'll take you off into another tangent...sorry if it isn't where you want to go

An "older" boat will keep you busy with updates, repairs, keeping the boat up to your standards.....we have two "older" boats, an 85 Bayfield and and 82 Stevens....both were kept to great standards by their former owners, but still required updating, repairs, replacing worn equipment. Perhaps more so than one of the "newer" models that you mentioned above.

If you do purchase an older boat, say a mid 80's vintage, be prepared to work on it, perhaps a wee bit more than a newer model....I'm not saying that you'd be busy 20 out of 24 hours a day, but you will have some repairs/updating to keep you occupied.

Personally, I enjoy working on boats. Sailing is great, love that also, but I really enjoy working on them as well, learning their systems, making the systems work...it's all part and parcel of the entire package for me.

Something you might want to consider before you buy...either or.

I like what I have....and am happy with our chosen route.

Also say you get a 30+ old 36'-40' boat that was a very good quality build at its time. One can get it now in very good shape for say $30-50K. Put another $30-50K in and for $60-100K total you have an offshore boat done to your specs and very reliable and tough adn with all new electronics and systems. Or one can spend $150-200K on a 5 year old "decent" boat or same $150-200K on a new Hanse, Bavaria or some such and what do you have? You still have to put in at least $20-50K to make her offshore ready and to your specs. So now you're up to $200-250K and it will still be an only so-so boat which will sell for a fraction of $200-250K 5-10-15 years later. Sure, your 30+ year old boat will also sell for a fraction of $60-100K which you sank into her but that fraction will be much less and the safety factors and so on were much higher during the years of ownership.

Haha, I know right... Now that when I read it over it makes absolutely no sense at all. What I was trying to get at is that boats loose value as they age.
