New Hinckley Sailboat

Hinckley announced a new Carbon fiber souwester 53 the other day. Kind of amazed Hinckley has launched two new sail models in less then 5 years.

Re: New Hinckley Sailboat

Not a boat for the tropics... big window area, little ventilation. I suppose those kinda folks just run a gen set and air con 24/7, so maybe it matters not that it's hard to get outside air inside.

Looks a lot like a lot of other modern boats... maybe good build quality?? They've lost the plot, deviating from their previous timeless beauty.

Re: New Hinckley Sailboat

Does anyone else think it seems quite limited on space considering it's nearly fifty three feet long?

8ft 3in draft, boy that will certainty aid in cruising in all of those shallow water scenic areas.

The great thing about Hinckley was the excellent build quality and their traditional styling.
Now they look just like every other modern bleach bottle out there.

I'm a long-time Hinckley fan, yet I'm in complete agreement with all of the above statements. With that aside, I'm sure the build quality is still of the highest level.

Fifty-three feet and it doesn't have a proper shower. Their market must be rich, dirty people.

Re: New Hinckley Sailboat

A few comments.
I have been to the Hinckleys build facility many times. They really are very well built with extreme attention to detail and a very proud workforce. So yeah it will be built well.

The boat was designed by Bill Tripp. His father was well known and designed some of the older Hinckley's. Bill works mostly with mega sailing yachts this is one of his smaller designs. TRIPP DESIGN - Naval Architecture / Design / 12m - 20m I assume the boat will sail quite well.
On the draft I have to imagine they will end up offering a lifting keel or shoal draft version.

On the shower I noticed that too but I think I may have found it just aft the hanging locker in the fwd stateroom.

On styling. First it's a personal thing. But besides that looking at the US market sales data it seems builders of cruising sailboats of traditional design have been losing out market share to modern European competition for some time. Hinckley offered more traditional models until a few years ago but orders tapered off so I think they are right in seeking a new design path.

Re: New Hinckley Sailboat

They have clearly lost their touch in the sailing yacht design. Power boat emphasis is clearly evident, not very attractive us functional for cruising. Sad to see.

Rich people do not get dirty in the first place.

Re: New Hinckley Sailboat

So with these being constructed using epoxy and carbon fiber, what sort of top coat do would they have? Some sort of epoxy compatible gelcoat or paint? Just curious. I also saw that they have the carbon/epoxy sport boat line too.

Re: New Hinckley Sailboat

I know it is just an artist's rendering, but what's up with that mainsheet?? And I presume they'll be adding something for the helmsman to sit on? And I'd have them put in some big quarter berths and forget about sleeping up in the bow of a flat bottom boat. Even at anchor with a little chop I'd not likely last long with my head bouncing up and down in the forepeak.

I'm pretty sure all the Hinckleys are Awlgripped (or something similar) I know they used to also have a layer of gel under the Awlgrip.
