Needed recommendations for surveyor for IP40 - Maryland

Howdy Folks,

It looks like we're going to have an accepted offer on what appears to be a very nicely maintained Island Packet 40. Will be booking travel in the next couple weeks (assuming seller signs the contract so far verbal only) for survey/sea trial/etc... and am looking for recommendations on an excellent and very critical marine surveyor in the Maryland area.

It would be great if they have knowledge/experience specific to Island Packet boats but not a requirement.

Please bring on the suggestions.

Also, I believe the boat (1999) is all original standing rigging. Knowing that would you recommend we spring for a rigger to come out and check rigging and potentially (x-ray) chainplates or something along those lines?

Thanks,
EB

E-mail Ed Kurakowski at S&J Yachts in Rock Hall, Md. He used to own Gratitude Yachts which sold IPs for years. He's sailed 'em across the ocean; probably sold the boat you are buying if it is in the Bay. He'll know a surveyor. Look for him under the S&J Yachts website.

Thanks Folks, please keep the recommendations coming. So far the folks who've been recommended are either booked or not available during our timeslot.

Additional recommendations greatly appreciated.

Re: Needed recommendations for surveyor for IP40 - Maryland

I have had good luck with surveyors Fred Wise and David Manning. Manning will climb the mast to do a cursory rig inspection. For a full rig inspection I'd highly recommend Walden Rigging of North East, MD if the boat is lying in the upper bay (they generally won't travel south of Baltimore/Rock Hall) and Dave of Bosun Yacht Services of Annapolis.

I just completed a full re-rig of my boat and formed some negative or lukewarm impressions of some other rigging outfits while I was in the process of getting estimates. I'd be happy to discuss more via PM.

There are probably not many riggers who will do x-ray inspections. I'd also be very surprised if the seller would even allow you to pull the plates pre-sale as it's invasive and poses a risk of rig failure or creating leaks if not done properly. For the rig inspection you'll probably spend $300 and for the pulling of the chainplates that could easily get into the $1-2K neighborhood. You might be better off to just assume everything needs replacement given its age, make a commensurate offer on the boat, and save your bucks for the re-rig project.
