Re: Need Help Islander 32

If you look at the forward section of my bilge, you will notice NEW wood in place. My bilge was full from years of sitting with no power to the pump.
I thought the same thing, a big project to replace stringers. Anyway, there is a thread on this forum, discussing that the wood, around the bilge is ONLY floor (sole) support -- easily replaced a few feet of totted wood, with new, pressure treated dock boards a neighbor was discarding,, easy project and FREE!!!

Re: Need Help Islander 32

It intrigued me what you said about these old stringers.
In my boat they extend about an arms length to either side from the bilge, which makes them about 4' long.
They are glassed in, not in their entirety, I guess you call that tabbed in.
So removing them would not be trivial, the floorboards would have to come up to do this properly.
Or you sister the old stringers, but it would sure be nice to have an old stringer as a pattern...
I did not find the article you were mentioning.

Something else.

What have you done about this strange storage for the LP gas.
And the small amount you can carry (is it 10 lb.?).
I don't want to cook anything for fear of having to open that enclosure to get the lp tank out.

Re: Need Help Islander 32

let me see if I can find that thread I referred to,,

not sure we you are able to store an LP tank,, where is it?
I don't see on my boat where a tank can be stored,,,

there was an old alcohol stove that was removed by the PO, and replaced with an AC/DC Refrigerator - so no real need for any flammable liguids aboard,

cheers,

Re: Need Help Islander 32

My lp tank is located under the port lazarette, there is a big hermetically sealed fiberglass box bolted to the deck structure close to where the winches are.
The box contains a 10lb. bottle for lp gas. To change the bottle you have to open the
aft side of the box which is held with 18 screws!
This is why I call this a strange arrangement, but I guess you don't cook so there is no
infrastructure for it and no problem.

My boat is the MK2.

Re: Need Help Islander 32

Hey guys just found this tread. I got my Islander 32 Mk2 1977 2 years ago and did quite a bit of work. including replacing the sole and floor joists. They were totally rotten and pretty much useless as structural support.
Also rebuilt the stern tube and surrounding area. Will post some photos later.
Very happy with this boat and sailing a lot. Haven’t tried it in 12’ seas yet : )
