Navy 44' sailboats for sale.

Came across these 44' sailboats at the GSA auction site. Seems like amazing boats that the Navy is dumping. There are 3 for sale ranging from 15-20K.

Looks like they have been stripped. To bad. If they could be sailed away I would be interested.

I haven't gone to the links, but they came with very basic utilitarian interiors - pipe berths, no doors, no woodwork or fancy cabinets, etc, if that is what looks stripped.

Those would be outstanding project boats for someone if they sell for under $20,000.

I suspect they will go for much more

Re: Navy 44' sailboats for sale.

Two of the three have no winches. From the specs, the smallest winch was a Barient 28 and there are a ton of these. Sheet winches were larger. Looking at more than 10 boat units to replace them all. Sails are not detailed other than minimal sails. There are sail bags on the boats but no idea of actual count or conditio. If the sails weren't replaced recently, they will have been used a lot and are probably ready for replacement. The electronics are very old though the site says they were all working when last checked. Hope it's the same for the diesels.

Really liked the McCurdy and Rhodes designs. The Navy 44 Mark I's are beautiful boats. If I was on the East Coast and could have a look at them, might think about placing a bid.

They are certainly well built. The transport thing would be a but much for me but if they were sailable I would bid on one in a heartbeat. Would be lots of work but worth it

I went aboard one of these in Bermuda. Built like tanks, though perhaps not as heavy as the Army would have built them. Good looking boats with reasonable performance (though they tend to be slow because they're so heavy.)

These boats are in pretty good shape. I looked at them last week, loading out the one that sold. They don't have many frills but they are complete
The company I work for owns two now.

Re: Navy 44' sailboats for sale.

If memory serves, there is no roller furling on any of these and not sure any of the winches are self tailing. There is quite a bit of money right there.

The engines will be well serviced, but high hours.

Of course, no amenities down below. But, universally well designed and well constructed boats. In today's market, 45k would buy you a lot of cruising boat, well equipped.

Best

They are selling a 1988 Navy 44 on gov liquidations in a few days. Have not seen it in person but am familiar with who has it and it should be a good one.
