Navigation App

Any suggestions on a navigation app. iNavX is recommended but a little pricey. I saw Marine Navigation for a lot less. Just wondering if anyone has experience with any of these. Thanks

I have been using SEAiq and it is fantastic. You can use CM93 and BSB/KAP charts with it, as well as other charting formats. You can even make your own charts and use them. If you have an internet connection, you can pull down Google Earth images for any region you are navigating in. It also connects NMEA data via wifi, if you have that capability, and handles AIS data well.

It costs $40. I have no connection with the company - just found it and started using it a month ago and am very impressed.

I have been using i-sailor on an iPad. I love it!! The display is crisp and stellar. Interface is intuitive. They apparently are the company that provides the nav stuff for the larger shipping vessels and even aircraft. Also, the few times I blew up my ipad, it was easy peazy to re-install because I simply went to their library and clicked on re-install. No extra charges.

I have the ipad with i-sailor as my primary gps and chart plotter mounted via a ram mount on the binnacle. I have a garmin hard wired at the nav station as backup. I can get 8hours of use before recharging the ipad with screen full brightness.

I have navionics and motion-X, both are good. as part of the marketing for the app the guy that designed motion-X used it as his primary nav on his open 50 in the transpac regatta a few years ago. between the 2 though I prefer navionics, more user friendly interface. how do you guys get GPS info at sea in your iphones and Ipads? I was under the impression that they figure out your location via cellular tower triangulation?

The IPAD 3 and later generations and IPAD air, as well as certain iphones have a dedicated gps chip. My droid also has a gps chip. The wifi only ipads DO NOT have a gps chip. You don't have to activate service on the later gen Ipads or the ipad air (i didn't).

The assisted gps utilizes triangulation from cell towers which is what you are referring to. Close to land, the device uses a combination of what's available. But.....the more stuff running on the Ipad, the shorter the battery life. I just use the Ipad air without cell service.

All of the cellular models of iPads from the beginning, and all iPhones, have had dedicated GPS in them. Cellular towers are not, and were never, needed to for the GPS in any of these.

How do you do that?
I have CM93 on my laptop and woulnd mind getting them on the iPad.

First, you have to pay $40 for SEAiq. Then you transfer your CM93 charts in a zip file onto it using iTunes (SEAiq has detailed instructions on their website).

You don't have to zip them first, but it sure saves space - SEAiq can read and use them zipped.

If I'm not mistaken, and I hope someone corrects or confirms me, but I think the Garmin BlueChart app does. It uses Garmin charts which are based on the Explorer charts...?
