NADA value on a Catalina 22
I'm looking to buy my first sail boat (as soon as I unload my power boat
I know a bit about motors and trailers so I can value those accurately and I've looked at a few boats so that I can more or less tell the difference between great shape and a rotting POS
Is the nada value on the catalina 22s fairly representative of market value?

Re: nada value on a catalina 22
I suggest you ask here: Recent Posts (old style) That forum has the most C22 sailors I see around active and helpful on the 'net. Only other resrouce would be the c22 owners association, don't know if their website has a forum, though.

Re: nada value on a catalina 22
I wonder if the owner of a particular boat is really the person to ask of it's real value? Probably not! Most everyone thinks their particular boat is worth more. :>)

That's a pretty popular boat so you can find lots of comps on Craiglist and sailboatlistings and Ebay, etc.
They're cheap enough that quality of the sails (and/or motor) can make all the difference. Buying a new suit of sails might cost half as much as your boat purchase price.

I would look for every listing for that boat in the last year or two, and for sure would visit the most active forums for it, if it has any. This will give you a range.
Beyond that, small sailboats have so many variables in their price - condition, age, location, what they come with, seller's motivation, popularity in the market...... all of these can produce tremendous swings in selling price. I've seen overpriced crap, and older but decent boats almost given away. At this size range, we're not talking big bucks except for new/near new.
Patience and research can pay off tremendously.

Avg Asking price for 80's boat:$5500
Avg asking price for 70's boat:$4050
Average of 50 boats: $4894
Low price $2250.
High price:$7500

Re: NADA value on a Catalina 22
Thanks for that.... I'm looking at a early 1990s Catalina 22 with a swing keel in good shape so $6000 seems to be in that ballpark.

Re: NADA value on a Catalina 22
22 foot trailable boat 25 years old or earlier have basically 80-90% of their value the combined value of its motor, sails and trailer. If those are all present and are in decent shape and/or are fairly recent than perhaps $4-5K would be justified, may be $6K if the hull and interior are in Bristol shape. Otherwise you're talking $2-3K tops, if that much.
NADA and BUC values on any boats 25+ years old are totally useless (i.e. too optimistic) except may be for insurance valuation purposes.

Re: NADA value on a Catalina 22
It seems like most of these boats are a) Super cheap and essentially worthless or b) overpriced.
Fortunately I'm super patient

Re: NADA value on a Catalina 22
The Catalina 22 is one of my favorite trailer sailors.
Great weekender, sails quite well, and with the pop-top and pull out galley surprisingly roomy.
Some are really nice... $5k with sails, ob, and trailer can be a good deal

Depends on where NADA is getting its information. I would guess that most sales of used C22s are private sales. With a private sale, there is no obligation to report the selling price to anyone.
They might be getting information from state DMVs who collect sales tax when the boat is registered, but even that is iffy, as many selling prices may be deflated by the buyer to reduce the sales tax burden.
Another issue with guides is that for most boat models too few are sold to give a decent market value. Guides that value used cars can be more accurate because there are many more of a given model being sold.
You might want to take at look at BoatUS, New To Boating - Boating Basics from BoatUS They have a pretty good guide to purchasing your first boat.

Re: NADA value on a Catalina 22
NADA represents what has actually sold, not some survey estimate, nor asking prices. Most folks are surprised at the low values. But NADA does represent average selling prices. For a c22, figure about $2000 bucks with worn equipment. New sails as someone said, will cost more than the boat is worth.

That's the theory, but where do they get their data? How reliable is that data?
Yacht World requires dealers to report actual selling prices. Brokers have access to that info, mere mortals do not.
