Moving A Sailboat From Lake To Coast..Costs?

I know this is different and there are a million answers to every question. I was just wondering what one could expect to pay to get a sailboat moved from an inland lake to the coast.
That would include preparation such as demasting, haul-out, trailering, transporting, put-in at new location, putting mast back up and rigging accordingly. Start to finish. Let's say on a boat about 35-40' in length transporting about 250 miles.
Any rule of thumb numbers to start the conversation? Seems like the father of a guy I know paid around 1200 for preparation and 1200 for setup once at the destination, but I cannot recall for certain...and don't know what he paid for transporting.

This is a curiosity question, not one I "need" answered. So, propositioning an actual quote is not something I need at the moment..I myself would probably just buy a boat already near my intended port..unless that was impossible or I received such an amazing deal inland.

First we have to know where you are, which country, which coast. And which lake would help. You cannot expect any answer with the information you've given. Also beam means a lot when moving a boat by land.

In general, if you do some of the work yourself like dropping the sails, removing the boom, stowing loose stuff below, you can probably do the unrigging, haulout and loading for less than $1000. Same or a bit more on the other end.

Transportation of 250 miles is a one day trip and should cost $1-2,000.

So about $4,000 for all.

Depends on which lake and which coast, also which state/province. Just going from Rhode Island to Massachusetts locations can show a huge difference in the costs of marine services.
Also beam and height make a huge difference, whether it's an escorted load or not, the price can vary widely.
Without more specific info it's just a wild guess.
In pricing out having my boat hauled to my property the difference in marine services from one area to another more than offset the cost of extra miles to the destination.
Even in my home port area the prices for the boatyard work varied widely. It would be well worth doing a little calling around first.
Six inches difference in beam width can cost a couple thousand.
I wouldn't even guess without hard information, I'd just be giving bad advice. When you get into the 40' range things can change quite a bit depending on dimensions.

Mast length also is an issue, if it's too long they can't strap it to the deck and transport it with the boat, which would require a separate truck.
Under 40', easy, over 40' not so easy.

Here's a good example for you. I got a quote to ship a Catalina 38 from Boston to Charleston for 4100. The mast is already down though.

From Lake Norman NC to Wilmington NC or Charleston SC(same price, 4 hr trip )it cost 850.00 for the trucker and 150.00 for the mast removal and 300.00 to lift ,pressure wash the bottom and load onto the truck,when it gets to the other end it was the same minus the truck driver..good luck

That seems waaaay cheap...1300+450=1750 total? I am fairly sure the guy I know paid that much just to get the mast down, everything secured, etc and loaded on the truck..on bother ends + the trucking costs..
1750 is not much at all.

After you remove the sails, lazy jacks and boom it's only a 20 minute job to remove and stow the mast. I wouldn't expect to pay more than 2500 for the whole project.

Kentucky Lake to Detroit:
- $400 to haul & unstep the mast (we did the rest)
- $4000 trucking
- $400 to launch and step the mast (again, we did the non-crane parts)

The number of states involved can have an impact also with permits.
Are they insured? You can find guys with an old F350 and a trailer but if there is a problem...

I shipped my 33 from Tennessee to the Chesapeake for $3500. The key question is whether your boat dimensions allow for transport within the dimensions of standard road lanes or whether you need chase cars for a a "wide load". Once you get into that type of thing you need permits and all sorts of other fees start to crop up. The prep and recommissioning at each end depend a lot on whether you do it yourself or pay to get it done.

Dont forget to protect the boat from flying pebbles, grit and other road crap. Much easier to wrap it than fix the gel coat later. Also dont forget to support the mast in as many places as you possibly can and pad the living crap out of it. You REALLY dont want to put a dent or kink in your mast. I packed everything loose into the quarterberth so it could shift around. You dont want anything loose at all.

If you pull and replace the mast yourself you can save 350.00..Pull up to a bridge and have someone helping ,it only takes a few minutes if you have the rigging undone before hand..Keep in mind my boat is 32 ft long and the mast is maybe 35 -40 ft long,might be more involved with a larger boat..good luck ..The boat transport company is as cheap as it gets from what I can tell(google or go to craigslist in Charlotte and look for"boat transporting" and look for "Mike" hes a good fellow and knows his business...good luck
