Any insight as to why these boats seemed to be priced so much less that comparable sized/capable boats?

They seem to be an awful lot of vessel for the 100-150k they tend to be listed for.

I have sent a PM to an owner, but interested in what the consensus may be.

I'll be interested to hear the views. I've been on one before. Huge below deck but as you know, they sail like a brick. Most were used for charter and heavily used/abused. Some were made for owners though and may be in better shape. Charter or owner would be a key question.

The OI series boats are definitely huge room. Sail performance isn't bad off the wind but a brick might point better close hauled.

The ones I've seen don't have a fancy wood interior so savings there. In general I think they are reasonably well built.

They were never intended to be raceboats. Power to windward to the Out Islands for a few days, and slide back to Florida on the easterlies for the rest of the charter week.

They are built like the proverbially named brick s==t house. They have a huge flat bottom keel, made out of polyester and glass with steel punchings poored in the mix. They are called encapsulated. That is what I bought when I retired. Mine was a small one, 30 ft long. It only drew 3 ft. I hit the bottom all over the Bahamas, and Belize and Guat. and some of Mexico. You could have a small dance party in the salon. One night we had a birthday party for a couple of well-liked cruisers and there were 14 people on board for about 6 hours. It was built in 78 and had its original diesel. Yanmar 20. always started, never a bit of trouble except for the learning curve it gave me. I loved it and would buy another. in a minute. Mac

Could be partially due to how really unattractive they are. Life's too short to own an ugly boat!

roomy and strong, not for racing but if you don't care about speed then enjoy...........survey and one owner better than charter.

Thanks for everyone that chimed in.

Won't be trying to win any races, and looking for an intermediate step before committing any "really big bucks" in the dream boat.

A reasonable survey, with boats of this size/capability for this price, we could consider skipping the charter scene all together.
