Conclusions

Hi Don,
Did you ever get an answer to your Morgan 454 question?(Quality/Sea Handling/Etc)
What were your conclusions on the boat?
I have the same curiosity as you did.
Regards,
Darin

Mostly between another thread and some digging. They look like nice boats. I still question the light displacement as far as comfort and no one ever gave an answer to that. I think it is a fast boat with good living space, limited but reasonable storage, small cockpit, good tankage.

It also wories me about the high number for sale that have been on the market a long time at what looks like low pricing (ie why don't they sell better). In the end I kind have moved on in thinking as I decided the M45 may not be a good choice for my wife and I as we age more.

M454

I understand.
Let me ask you one more question.
How would you gauge the build quality of these boats?
Would you say they are comparable to a Beneteau First series of the same age or more like a Hunter of the same age?
Regards
Darin

The main common problem I came across in research on the boat was the mast step. Seems the model had a reoccurring issue with this.

Other than that I would say the build quality is good. But only extended time on a boat really answers that.

Send me your email and I forward all the "things" I learned about the before I decided it wasn't really what I was looking for.

Took a year to find the one I wanted. Not a Morgan boat design, designed by Nelson/Marek and build at the Morgan plant. IOR rated boat. Many were build for charter in the islands ("Buy a boat and charter it - let someone else pay for it") was popular sales theme back in the 80s. Many came off charter - worn / minimal upkeep. Most still around have been worked and maintained. Make sure any additions or corrections were by someone who was competent.

I have sailed the boat in several storms. One was a stationary low off Bermuda which hung around a week. 45-60 Knts wind and seas build up to 28+ ft. Boat was strong and Nothing broke. Found a few leaks, in the overhead but most boats have a few when the ocean is breaking over the bow for 3-4 days. Original engine, I rebuilt in 96.

Now ashore but we sail Maine every summer.

Is that your boat for sale in Waldoboro? Considering a 454 as a decent sailing summer home. any comments pro/con would be appreciated. A little concerned about the large sail area. How would you rate the boat short-handed? Thanks Doug

I have owned this boat for a year now and love it. For a wonderful article see: "The Best of Both Worlds: The Nelson/Marek Morgan45" by Harmon Heed. 40 November 2008,

Re: Morgan 454

Thanks, but my interest in the 454 looooong passed. I never could really get over that it seemed they all stayed on the market for years.
