Morgan 32 rudder shoe

1984 Morgan 323 shoal keel. Currently at the boatyard for installation of a bushing in the rudder shoe (part that traps and hold rudder bottom pin). Boatyard says, "There are no bolts holding the shoe in place, we can't remove it. We have to do a more complicated job with the shoe in place." I'm skeptical. How else would the shoe be held in place? Anyone? Thanks and happy sailing.

Re: Morgan 32 rudder shoe

Grind the filler/fairing compound from both sides of the shoe and it will reveal that a bronze shoe is typically held in place with bronze rod whose ends have been peened over to hold it in place. Possibly it was bolted on and the fairing compound is masking the head and nut.
I would not want a yard which was unaware of this common method of attaching rudder shoes working on my boat.

Re: Morgan 32 rudder shoe

I just removed the rudder shoe on my Morgan 323 this winter to redo the bushing. The shoe is held in place by four screws. Two on each side.

Re: Morgan 32 rudder shoe

Gentlemen: Thank you for the information and ideas. I am very grateful. As a follow up, I agreed instinctively with Orion Jim and had my boat launched by the boatyard with the rudder "as is". I didn't trust them to do much with her when they couldn't find the shoe attachment points.

Coolio: I'd LOVE to see any pictures you might offer up. It would be a tremendous help. Anything more specific - exactly where the bolts are placed? I will also be reaching out to you privately in hopes of connecting over our 323s.
