monohull that can match a cat for space?

Hi all

Before I completely dismiss the idea of a monohull for liveaboard cruising (family with 3 young children) are there any monohulls up to, say, 51ft and about $170,000 that come close to matching a Lagoon 380/410 for internal space and comfort?

The wife likes the space, light and modern fittings of the lagoons so I wondered if there were monohull alternatives?

Cheers.

This is just my opinion, so take with a grain of salt. If room, less rolling on the hook, and shallow draft, are on the top of your list, then cat. If high average speed in open water, all sea states is a priority at $150K, then a Santa Cruz 50 will complete passages much faster than most all cats. Don't flame me folks, it is just my opinion. If I was looking to set a record for, say, "Most solo circumnavigations by an old fart", my choice would be a Sundeer 64 mono.

If you plan on cruising for a long time, those 3 young children will be teens, and will want the cabin layout of a cat.

Re: monohull that can match a cat for space?

The three monohulls that we identified as cat contenders in terms of space were:

Hake Yachts 46RK: Hake Yachts [their website is down just now for some reason]
Beneteau Sense 50 or 55: http://www.beneteau.com/Sailing-Yachts/Sense
The Feeling 48, 49 or 52: Feeling - voilier monocoque en version quillard ou driveur intgral - par Alliaura Marine - Accueil

Don't know if you can find any of them used within your price range, but those were the ones that struck as comparable to "livability" of a multihull...

Yes, very nice indeed. A tad too pricey though! The only reason I am exploring this route is price - the above yachts aside, $170,000 or so seems to buy (for obvious reasons) a lot more monohull than multihull...

Santa Cruz 50 @ $149K asking. Probably not as beamy as your looking for.

We've got friends cruising the Caribbean in one of these and they have a set of twins in their early teens. It's got tons of space and the price isn't bad. You'd have some funds left over for upgrades, etc.

In my mind a mono will never be as light and airy as a cat (although that new Sense comes close), but you get so much more boat for the money. IMHO

I think your like for like length comparison is flawed.

IMO although a Cat has double the hull length of a Mono of the same size, probably fairer to add only 50% / 66% to give a like for like footprint.

Therefore for a 40 foot cat looking at 60' (plus) of mono. The cat equivalent of 51' being around 30 - 33'. Obviously that may affect the budget a tad (and sometimes downsides to the length vs sometimes downsides to the beam).

But if the Missus likes the layout of a Lagoon, I suspect that is pretty much what you will be buying (and IMO nothing wrong with that).
