ok so is post whore time-- kissed and made up with a fellow entrenched medical care renderer-- thankyou, therapy!
crazy?? PROLLY-- I DID buy a blown up and trashed formosa-- talk about kicking something when it is down--last po was temper driven at times. yipes.. so i have some wood to fix.. big deal. i got a helluva deal on a olid hulland deck with some seemingly major stuff wrong-- replaced engine, replaced deck backing plate, and now to the biggest meanest thing i have ever inmy life seen--this lil speedbump called shaft log and packing gland. wow... they dont have stuff like this on a cal!!!
berg--i think ye should go with the crazy bitch in the formosa to the yard to see this stuff-- is impressive.
smaller boats with inboards have a more compressed view of what i have in a very very tight space-- ericson had this done when i bought her-and engine overhaul--al at once--no --not trying to sell her to ye..even if she can be trucked without a paid escort thru new mexico---- is 35x5x10. no oversize.
i have friend with a cal 34-- these boats can be purchased for sooo small a sum--cal 30s here run around 2500-and up depending on condition...solid, stout, basic BOtAT.
but try to find a less pricey-- hard to find in BRISTOL condition, in many cases, but they clean up well. bristol just means can charge more for asking price.
smb--you do have a good point-- what better place to find a boat than being on one--is how i find and found mine-- all of them.. is like mate-- they find you, not we find them. think about it berg-- ye will meet me when yard time comes....dont overextend yourself until ye find the boat that makes yer heart patter....buying boats isnt practicality-- only in part--is passion makes ye love em and call em yours. is like a lover-- she will come to ye.....save the dough. i know lots of goo dplaces to look over on the other side--i paid attention on my cruise....and in mean time, learn to sail so when ye get ther eis easier-- also, gaining access and disembarking is easeir on a boat that in rough water holds a lil still for ye to climb aboard. and there is the on board fitness program.........

gord--that is exactly the catalogue i saw in sdmc... yup.. thankyoui see my part!! hoooyaaah.. but stll not the dang tubo--is not there-- is 30"x2"..yipes--is it a special order/creation?? this coul dbe interesting.......called sdmx for verification...

Bergie Boagie - zeezee makin' a lot of sense there. Boat find you. Can't go lookin' for love. Plus will getcha out there...can always take a leap frog (crew a bit; help a bit; go home a bit). Plus lots of GREAT boats right now down in Mexi for sale. Baha HAAHAHAHAHAA on those suckers that went downwind and then learned they didn't have a stomack to come back uphill...now they are sellin' like crazy. This will getcha there. Can't do it remote or bootstrappin'.

i appreciate all the suggestions and offers, and am seriouslyconsidering it, but, i ahve issues.. and dealing / relating / communicating with people is on top of the list... being on a boat in the middle of nowhere with someone i dont know on a boat that needs a lot of work and a crew to help finance the voyage scares teh living crap out of me....


Being ont eh water by myself will scare me a bit at first, but hopefully i will have support and otehrs near me to help should i need it, but being on a boat with someone else and dealing with thier personality or them dealing with mine adds so much more to that equation...

kinda why I am interested in going with zee on any sea trial or any other local excursion to maybe overcome these issues???

I havent done well with people who know me, and now the suggestion is to go with someone who doesnt??? hmmmm

hay--i is cool.. ye can shakedown this boat with me anytime-- as soon as the packing gland mayhem is solved i will be motoring until i neeed to adjust the dealies again and chainplates are the last big job of importance onthis ketch-- lil small stuff is left--i can do that--- soisnt like taking a rusted out tramp steamer somewhere with cpt blight....(pun intended)
i figger as one learns, so does he other in any kind of instruction/learning/ educational/growth thing. and in mazatlan, there is an ultimate source/font of knowledge--- owner of patricia belle, a chartering schooner-- a very good friend., and one of my gurus--an unlimited master for 40 yrs now. (is why i am going htere-- he has done canal x2,and said i can use their dock.....)

Hey Zee, I know it's probable you've already done this, but have you contacted Buck Algonquin tech staff and described your log or bearing housing? Looks like they have or can provide anything you may need.

Maybe you can replace that shaft log with a fitting on each end and a hose between them?

We recently had a couple come in from out of town for some business. We did not know them but offered our home for the night. I say, "Come on up and I'll show you your room." With apprehensive looks on their faces they hesitated and asked, "Are you sure you want us to stay?" I replied grinning, "Are you sure you want to? We all have a few hours to decide." This set us all at ease. It turned out they spent the next night also. We had a blast together and have become best of friends. They've even offered us unlimited use of their propety in the Bamamas.
Now granted, it seldom/hardly ever, turns out this way, but it's ALWAYS worth the investment of a little time. The pay back and rewards can go on and on forever and ever. Amen.

as i have said before and others have been so kind as to reinforce, there is a friendship bond that exists after passages that is not found from or in other places or situations. the least that would happen is friendship -- good solid ones. also education and loss of boatvirginity. knowledge is power and that power helps buy boats without financial raping. is all positive.

buck algonquin and sdmx are working on my stern tube issues and i should be hearing back soon. kate at yard is aware of this, and i will be in touch with her weds next. she is also looking up and researching her files for formosa and ct and hardin seawolf 41 work ever done.. this is a big deal... pandora didnt have a clue....lotsa research to get it right first time and not sink me financially or physically...
deep---is a 30 inch X 2 inch diam tube over shaft-- this has no stress on it-- the packing gland is on one end, and on the exit to sea end is a shaft log fitting and cutlass bearing. my particular shaft log is bolted into hull with 4 bolts. there is a bulkhead / beam the tube travels thru to get to flange of packing gland, which i was advised by buck algonquin is a rudder packing gland.... hhmmmm...but mine isnt only formosa done this way, it seems....

kinda wondering if the 30 inch tube could be made of pvc, --- been thinking on htis--- mebbe wouldnt have somuch electrolysis problem... and i think there isnt any stress or twist or what have you on this tube.......

zee, that should work well, but I think I would prefer a marine rated hose (below waterline rated). Of course you would have to come up with fittings for the ends. Finding a replacement for the tube you have may be a big problem.
