Re: Max length = 26 feet

Not sure where you're located but here's a 26 in the Tampa Bay area & a 22 in Sarasota.

Re: Max length = 26 feet

Island Packet & Nimble both made 26' boats that are similar to the Nonsuch in quality. The Nimble Arctic & Kodiak models are actually motorsailors that are pretty neat. For a newer boat Seaward has a 26' boat that would be worth taking a look at.

Re: Max length = 26 feet

I had a Pearson 26 for about a dozen years. It was a very solid boat, cozy below, and sailed well. They can be had very inexpensively, so you can update it as you see fit.

Yes the Pearson Renegade is a nice little boat and well-built. Performs well too with the fin keel.

Re: Max length = 26 feet

If the length is 26' overall a lot of 26's will not qualify because the bow sprits are rarely included.

Re: Max length = 26 feet

Of course there are lots of boats at 26' and under that would meet your needs. I have a share in an Ericson 27 and like it very much. I'm on the West Coast and there are lots of Ericsons here and they seem to be out on the water more than most. You'll pay much less for an Ericson than you would for a character boat like the Nonsuch. An Ericson 26 with an inboard in very good condition can be found here for about $6000.

An excellent Ericson resource: EY.o Welcome Page

I would go for a UK sailboat such as the Westerley Centaur 26

CENTAUR 26 (WESTERLY) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
Westerly Centaur B - NOT FOR SALE, details for information only
1973 Westerly Centaur sailboat for sale in Kentucky

etc...

The Britts are quite good at building offshore compatible small sailboats they might not be the sexiest looking but they're truly seaworthy: Good luck!

That Bristol is a classic that would be worth restoring. Nice boat.

Re: Max length = 26 feet

I have sailed Nonsuch 26 classic for the past two years in Lake Ontario. The standing headroom is about 6' 1", and as everyone realizes there is lots of room inside. Many people have commented that they are more like a 30 footer inside. Interestingly I am often able to keep up and even pass boats my length or longer when sailing. Last year I was away from my dock for three weeks on two separate cruises. Has anyone mentioned they are designed to be sailed almost flat, maximum recommended heel is 15? This feature may be very attractive to your wife and others. I have been out in the strong winds healed over, reefed the main, which is done from the cockpit, then sailed almost flat, with a modest and sometimes no loss of speed. In Canada this boat is usually sold for under $30,000. Other sailers, starting with the surveyor, often comment on the high build quality of the Nonsuch. There is an excellent owners website which you may find interesting. As you can guess I highly recommend a Nonesuch 26 classic.

Not surprising that you're fast for a 26 footer: Your waterline -which determines your maximum theoretical speed- is almost as long as on a 29 or 30 footer ! Your Nonsuch has almost no overhangs
Compare data of Nonsuch 26 vs First 28 for example:

FIRST 28 (BENETEAU) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
Cheers !

I should clarify: As a resident of the island, my mooring permit issued by the town of Nantucket is $150/season. I own the equipment and pay someone to set it in the spring/remove it in the fall and maintain it (usually about $400/year). Your rental mooring is owned and maintained by a private enterprise - Nantucket Moorings - and that's who I'd have to rent from if I wanted to get a larger boat (last time I checked, they quoted me about $4,000 for a 34' boat).

Lots of good feedback so far, thank you all.

Re: Max length = 26 feet

There are certainly lots of boats out there that will "do". I guess my main question is whether the Nonsuch would hinder my desire to become a better sailor if I get a bigger boat - that probably will not be a catboat - at some point in the future. It's got the room/features I'd WANT, within the limits of my mooring permit, but will it give me the real sailing experience I'd need - as a stepping stone to a larger boat if/when my number comes up for a bigger mooring permit. I'm not really into racing (per se), but I'd like to know how to fly a spinnaker etc.. Should I just save that for the "next" boat (if and when that time comes)?
