Manual water pump for sailboat

Hi all,

I like to add a manual water pump to my sailboat as an extra safety measure.

I never Had one or saw one, and I need your advice if you have any experience with water pumps.

I like to know what brand and model is good?
What metal should I choose for the pump?
How many gallons of water per minute a pump should be able to manage to be considered good?
Where I can buy it from, and how much it costs roughly?

Thank you so much.

Look at West Marine for the various types of pumps. If you sail a lot, you might think about putting a foot pump, so you dont have to hold a pot or glass at the same time you are trying to move a lever back and forth. Big brass hand pumps are beautiful, but not always the most practical choice.___My 2 cents worth.____Grant.

Since the OP said for "safety" I'm assuming he means a bilge pump and not a galley pump.

I'd look into the whale gusher line and size it appropriately to your boat.

Target, your right. I missed the point on that post. I second the Whale Gusher line, the bigger the better. Off shore racing rules require(I believe) that a manual bilge pump must be placed so that the helmsman can operate it. It makes sense. Unless you have a small boat, the Whale Gusher 30 is worth its rather high price. Look at it as cheep insurance._____Grant.
