I was talking with kenomac. This is the only yacht that caught my attention in the >50 foot range. I like different.

Seems like its won everything it set out to win. Speed is huge, comfort, safety, cheap to run and maintain.

One for sale in the U.K. at @ $160K. I viewed. Fell in love.

As kenomac pointed out, the interior is fairly plain in finish. There is no wood for maintenance reducing reasons. Being long and thin, the space is spread out a bit, but I kinda like that.......

If you decide to buy, put it somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere or the Caribbean, so we can do the endless summer thing.

Back when I was younger, my dad had a Mac 25. The 65 was always my dreamboat back then, loved the look of it then, and still do.

For me it is the sure handling.
Roger Macgregor, a solitary sailor, by all accounts sailed his singlehanded for thousands of miles. Its not a complicated vessel by any means and oh so lovely to look at.
Yep.. the finish is early "MFI" (for the Brits here) internally but not hard to make gorgeous. To be honest, I like it as it is.

Well.... it's just a long narrow racing shell really. If that's what you like go for it. But it's not really a cruiser or have the accomodation of a 50 ft real cruiser. Then again, how much does a person need! could be fun..

er... 3 cabins with private heads and shower?
saloon (salon) huge seating areas?
Full size galley?
Inside steering console?
Most importantly....... chill area for beer.

Probably the fact its posted in monohulls and it only has one hull gave it away eh?

Nope.......... Im currently sailing a Westerly Centaur and enjoying it. I dont really like large yachts but visiting one of these really blew me away. Now for the "yotties' this is not a vessel they perhaps would consider. The finish is not luxurious, however, its like s h one T off a shovel in terms of speed and comfortable to boot. I like it.

Many knock Macgregors and have slammed this vessel.... I just like it.

I like sailing. My preference is for a Cat and I havent changed my mind. It doesnt stop me considering monohulls from time to time.......Also my financial position changes from time to time and allows for expanded thoughts.

This is the FIRST >50 yacht that I have ever even passingly considered for owning...doesnt mean I will get it...... or even if its the best value out there.. its just nice. Unless you dont like long and thin.

Im sure an Oyster is way better in terms of being a cruiser yacht...... I just see this as something I would like.

It is a good looking boat. You would probably like one of these cats, same kind of styling, I little more expensive though.

Offshore Cats and Mac 65′s

Hi, After reading your observations about cats for offshore cruising we have started to rethink the one-year Pacific cruise we have been planning for our family (three adults, two children 11-13 ) starting next July. Any views on a Macgregor 65 as an alternative to a 40ft cat? Being UK sailors we haven’t come across these boats over here. Are they as fast and as tough as their supporters claim? Any comments will be very much appreciated. Thanks for a great site. Hugh & Deb

Hi Hugh and Deb: I hesitate to comment on any specific Mac 65 as they vary a lot, or that is what I’ve been told. I don’t think Roger MacGregor ever intended this boat for offshore work. But if the boat is properly outfitted, and carefully sailed, it will probably do a lot better than many boats out there cruising.
If you do get serious about one, be sure to pay attention to the range of positive stability. Often with boats like this they start out with an OK LPS, but then the Owners add all sorts of weight up high with davits and dinghies, and roller furling sails, and the LPS drops alarmingly.
This is true with all offshore boats–not just the Mac 65s.
As to boat speed, a Mac 65 would leave any 40′ cruising cat in the dust. Good Luck–Steve Dashew
