MacGregor 26m Mast Transport?

Has anyone ever tied a Macregor 26M Mast to the top of a dodge caravan
and traveled 1200 miles with it. Would it be safe? They tell me at Kelly Hanson Marine that they can tie it to the luggage rack it will hang over about 7 feet on each end of the van. My question is: is it legal? will it bend traveling down the highway with the wind load? I cant find anyone to ship it. The mast is 28-30 feet long.

Thanks In advance for your help!!

I had a 26M; had a lot of fun with it. I would think the mast would damage the luggage rack. Those things are not very strong and the mast is a bit heavy. I would try to make up some kind of cradle with a large block of wood with a slot in it and some carpet scraps or rags to protect your roof paint.

By law it is a traffic hazard and would require a flag on both protruding ends. Expect to get stopped by the boy's in blue and your rig gone over with a fine tooth comb. They'll think you're stealing aluminum for the scrap value.

No, I don't think the wind will bend the mast. It's pretty stiff. The wind's gonna push it around a lot though. I would have a rope bridle from the ends to the bumper corners. That's the only way you're sure the thing won't slide around.

So, do you have the hull to go with that spar?

At first I thought the mast was 26metres and I thought what the hell are you on? We have specific laws here in NZ on lengths on the road and overhangs etc etc. I would imagine you would or should have similar laws and your traffic department would be best to talk to.

We trailered ours for 8 hrs or 800 kilo's there was no problem, but you do need to put some lights on the mast if you are traveling at night or and a red flag, tie it down really good. We travelled from Hamilton, Ontario from the 401 and there are lots of OPP's out there and we saw alot and had no problems out to the outskirts of Montreal ,(and our roads are not in good shape lots of pot holes) just make sure you tie it down in the middle to prevent it from springing all all over the place.

In the early 1970's I had a SparCraft Mast shipped from Seattle to San Francisco tied to the top of a tractor-trailor rig. A pal and I managed to get it as far as the truck-stop near SeaTac and then we just talked to the truckers until we found someone headed to SF and offered him $50.00 to let us tie it to the top of his trailor, $25.00 at the start and the balance on delivery. He stopped and dropped it off at the Richmond Boat Works for us and collected his second $25.00. No fuss, no muss, no damage.

FWIW...
