Macerators

We would like to install macerators in the galley sink to discard organic pieces as well as in the shower drains so that hair doesn't clog up the plumbing.

Any advice as to what the best solution is?

Re: Macerators

Flexible/diaphragm pumps are the way to go - no burned up impellers to deal with.

FWIW, I think a shower drain hair strainer is the better way to go. Macerators IMO don't deal with hair fibers very well.

I think you will find that hair loves to wrap around macerators. I would use a hair trap for the shower. They sell a rubber/silicone thing that goes on your drain that traps hair with amazing effectivity. They are about $6.
Google: danco drain hair trap.
They don't clog up blocking water flow. They have little hooks that keep the hair from sliding thru.

Re: Macerators

I had a very fine strainer in front of the shower impeller pump. All the hairs clogged it up so effectively that I had to clean it every 2 to 3 weeks. Because of the pump installation this was real PITA.
Took out the fine mesh filter and installed a less fine mesh filter at the shower evacuation under the wooden floor.
For the mesh I bought a cheap kitchen sieve and cut out the SS wiremesh. Cut to size and glued on existing with epoxy.
You can now easily clean this mesh very frequently, anybody can acces it. Pump has been running in this configuration for the last 3 years. And the shower is used daily for several months non stop in summer.
Below is picture of my solution.Click image for larger version

Re: Macerators

Yes, I think simple is best, the strainer ideas, especially DIY simple strainer would be preferable, as that way you can modify as required. My shower drains into one of the bilge areas and is pumped out by one of several bilge pumps. However after looking at a few of those simple strainer solutions, I may add one. Stuffing around with a whole pump system for shower hair to my mind is a waste of time, money and practicality.
Not required for myself, as I am follicly challenged, however I am sure it would be handy when guests are aboard.
