I'm in Greensboro, NC. Long way from the ocean...

I'll ask about the partial survey, that is a great idea.

I've got to say Frank is impressive over the phone.
The rest of the folks in the area have openings by the end of the month... clearly I'm looking at boats during the wrong end of the year.

surveyors

go to The National Association of Marine Surveyors (NAMS)
or The Society of Accredited Marine Surveyors, Inc.® - (SAMS®)

I am familiar with many of the Chesapeake Bay surveyors, so if you pick one and want an opinion before signing up, I'll be happy to reply off-line.

Peter Hartoft is excellent, if you want one that will really take a very serious look at the boat & find absolutely everything that is wrong.

Surveyor

Here's a list from Deltaville: We used Don McCann and were thoroughly pleased with the experience. We are newbies to buying a boat and sailing and he answered all the questions that we didn't know to ask!

I actually had a pre-purchase survey done on one... Fred Hecklinger did it. Real pleasant guy! Only thing the boat had going for it was the ships bell...

But I did end up buying a boat, a Triton... just not the one that spurred the question. Stupidly, I did it without a survey. Shame. I know better, yet it was a compulsive buy.

This means that whatever problems it has I have no one to blame... but myself.
