Life Raft

Plan on cruising Northern Caribbean for a month... deciding if I should get a life raft. Already have a dingy and EBRIB.... do most coastal sailors have life rafts?

Re: Life Raft

Do not think what most have. Think what you want to have.

In warm waters / good season / close to islands you may be OK with a sound dinghy and an EPIRB.

BUT the decisions are yours. You are the captain.

Re: Life Raft

Can't tell you what most sailors have but I have the EPIRB, DSC radio and a Winslow 4 person offshore liferaft. It was about $3K usd. We chose it, in part, because it was light enough for my wife to launch.

Some will call it overkill. Probably right, probably never need it. But if the doo doo ever hits the fan I'll be happy to have it. When I could still fly I learned there was nothing more worthless than sky above you and runway behind you. Maybe you can add liferaft not on board. 😀

Re: Life Raft

We just bought our current boat back in July, it has an old Elliot 6 person commercial raft. We were going to get it recertified but it has not been inspected for a long time and the estimate is $1800. They are telling us commercial rafts need to be inspected annually since they are not sealed. We will most likely replace it with a recreational offshore 6-pack. It will not need an inspection for 3 years. I would never go out of sight of land without a raft.

Re: Life Raft

I have same setup as Rich.

Apparently, there are some who also swear by the use of bike helmets when underway.

Everyone has their own safety thresholds I guess

Re: Life Raft

Purely a personal decision. I still have the desire to reduce my estate while I still have my health, so I have one. If you would like to turn your estate over to your heirs prematurely don't make the investment.
