I believe you can block the ads - but you can't block the data collection and tracking. Everything from a smartphone, to cars, to credit cards tracks us now. Not seeing the ads is a benefit, but they can still see you.

It’s virtually impossible to block it all — at least not while living a modern life. But online you can do some things. Ad blocking is one tool. To stop all the background snooping and data collection on websites like this I use Ghostery.

They're required to delete it on request of European customers. I think that law is pretty much ignored without consequence though and I doubt they'd honor it here since they're using your content to make money.

I don't begrudge them the business they built, good on them. It's a business, one that requires we continue to generate huge amounts of free content in order to succeed. So from a real politik perspective they need to keep the content generators happy and not forget who butters their bread and the content generators need to realize they're the ones actually creating the value here and not let the people we're monetarily supporting forget that.

I never have never seen a political ad here because I have an ad blocker loaded

The poll related to advertisements. NB not mention of matters which arise for sailors out of political events.

Thus, to take an example, the disastrous impact of Brexit in respect of VAT. This site, along with such as the RYA, have been very helpful as to how to mitigate the consequences if so desired.

Now, there will be some dyed in the wood Brexit supporter who will take issue with me that anything about it could be disastrous. But I am not interested in sentiment. Just facts as they impact on me as a boat owner.

Adblock Plus combined with DuckDuckGo........

I still get emails however from EBay and a supermercado I frequent.... trying to sell me stuff I have already bought...

To give an example... I wanted to buy a bucket.... found online this supermercado had them for $1.50... went to town and bought one...

Six months later I was still getting emails....'You still looking for a bucket?'...... FMTT.......

slight derail, but the ads posted by g00gle on CF have those little 'X' boxes in the upper right corner which allow you to give feedback on a particular ad. I'm trying to train it to stop showing those Chinese negligée ads.


(Waitaminute, can one truly see too many Chinese negligée ads? Maybe if they had more and different ads....)

That's how different the experience is for everybody. I wish I got negligee ads. I get battery chargers and hand tools...
