Lemsteraak and Zeeschouw Type Boats for Cruising ?

I've got a 14 ft beam on my Huntingford designed Cooper 416. It's 41' 6" in length and with the pilothouse very roomy. I was on a Cooper 353 once and found it very nice as well, in a shorter version of the same craft:

Why don't you look at a Thomas Colvin design trading schooner? Pretty lines, practicle rigs, loads of room and built in steel. Parker Marine also have some interesting designs in ply/epoxy construction. The lumber schooners like the J.F. Levitt are good shallow draft wide displacement hulls as well.

I once watched from my house a Colvin Chinese lug rigged schooner TRY to beat up Puget Sound. It was pathetic. It sat in the same place for hours.

We had Herman Goering's GROOTE BEER ( sp?) up her for years and I assume it got here on it's own bottom I never said you can't do it in one of thise traditional Dutch craft.

What was the tide doing at the time Bob? Are you slagging another designer? I think Colvin sailed a junk rig on a design of his for many years didn't he? Did Blondie Hasler use a junk rig on Jester? Do chinese junks even sail. I am no designer so I guess I shouldn't speculate. Stanely steamer indeed. Are you "The" Robert Perry yacht designer or someone who shares the same name?

Yep, that's me. I 've sailed for over 50 years and I've been in the design busines for 43 years. I love Colvin's designs but they are slow, slow slow.
If you are comfortable with slow then I think a Colvin design, while a bit "agricultural" for my taste would be a fine boat for you. But I have learned over time to appreciate performance and goling to weather seperates the men from the boys. When it is truly ugly out there it's nice to have a boat that can take you to weather in confidence.

I have always been a fan of Colvin's designs. I never met the man but I have great respect for his work. He was authentic and original. However, I appreciate his boats for what they are. That's good enough for me. Like them for what they are and don't pretend they are something else.

The tjalk, zeeschouw and lemsteraak are all boats that sail better with a load of freight, that is what they were built for, shipping freight in the canals and lakes of the Netherlands. None of them were intended for use on the North Sea. I used to sail as a mate on a tjalk, I tried to talk the captain into going out on the North Sea. He told me I was crazy.
