Never even seen one before, but after quick research it looks like a pretty capable boat. Built in South Africa to Lloyd's standards with a collision bulkhead. Plenty of water and fuel tankage.

Here's one for sale in the states:

Thx for the input I really like it just worried about the rig in a storm situation but all my research seems to point to it being easy to handle and maintain

Never seen one but I'd sure like to be on that sea trail! I've always admired the cat ketches, just never got a chance to sail one. At first blush that looks like a nice one... very intriguing... would love to see more of the hull esp. under the waterline

There's a bit of information on Freestaning CF Masts in here http://www.cruisersforum.com/forums/...ml#post2052149
Especially if you follow the enclosed links. And aside from that, there's the obvious; speak with the boat's designer.

Also Yves Tanton is an incredible info source on freestanding masts, particularly given that he has a few boats out there with them. And he's VERY easy to talk to. Particularly given that it doesn't take long to figure out that he's quite a genius, but that he tailors what he tells you to whatever level you're on.

So, properly couched, despite the boat not being his design, it might be worth having a chat with him. Worst he can do is pass on the convo, though I'm guessing that he'd give you a few minutes.

Not sure if you saw this, you probably have:
SA Yacht Blog: Pelican 42
The more I look at it the more interesting it is. I wonder how well it points?

Re: lavranos 42 pelican cat ketch

The one on e-bay in the US would be a steal at double that price.
I have a free-standing mast on my present boat and would never go back. Easy to
design and I believe much safer offshore as you are not relying on a hundred little
rigging pieces.
I have cruised in 5 different sailboats over 40 years. This boat would be my choice.
It has everything done right according to my experience.
Should I have had the inclination to go full time cruising again I would have bought this boat months ago. No production boat can offer all that it has.
Did I mention I was also a small boat manufacturer at one time?
