Keel Stepped Water Tight Sealing

I just bought a Herreshoff 28, she is keel stepped.
Please see my attached photo.
What are my best options for sealing the coach roof penetration?
Thanks

There was a thread about this not too long ago. I believe one of the ways endorsed by several people was the use of a wax toilet ring. Sealed pretty well if a little messy to install.

Use a product called Sparetight. It's a one time deal and works like a charm.

I didn't know that spartite's claim to fame was to give a water tite seal. Is so, then there's no need for a mast boot. I've tried every type of mast boot possible and still have not sealed the leak.......so maybe it's time for spartite?

Re: Keel Stepped Water Tight Sealing

West Marine and others sell a boot made by SSI. WM part # 191197.

They are easier to install if the mast is out when you put it on but that isn't mandatory. Just have to make sure to seal all the edges as instructed and it will never leak there. The deck ring might leak but the mast seal won't.

You can make your own mast boot from a truck inner tube and a couple of big hose clamps. If the mast is on the boat seal the splice in the inner tube with contact cement. Use a bit of RTV between the rubber and the mast before tightening the clamp. Same at the deck ring and it won't leak. Then cover over that by tying on a nice leather UV cover. It will look "salty" and last a long time.

Another boot material that is successfully used is wet suit neoprene foam. It is pretty flexible, stretchy and easy to seal. You can use wet suit contact cement to close it up and it will be quite durable.

Cheers,

Jim

Thumbs up Re: Keel Stepped Water Tight Sealing

I put 3/4" masking tape around my step when I poured the spartight so it came out 1/2" proud of the step. Now I just wrap a turn of white electrical tape to cover the seam, no boot needed. Added bonus, it holds the mast right where I want it.

Spartite is great, but you still need to cover it up with a boot, to protect the spartite from UV. THink of it as two-stage protection.

Spartite is good I had it on another boat but its a bitch when you want to unstep the mast.
I find butyle flashing tape the best and cheapest option and its available anywhere.. Use it for all sorts of things and at 6USD a roll its cheap...

I coated the deck collar generously with Vaseline and did not go above the collar when I did the pour.

I plan to pull the mast in a couple of months. Fingers crossed.

Re: Keel Stepped Water Tight Sealing

I've used the stepped vynil type sucessfully. also avail at west marine. It's more likely your mast will leak internally into the bilge then thru most boots I think.

Re: Keel Stepped Water Tight Sealing

That deck ring might also be the source of a leak. Not sure if water drops from that source would appear to be coming from the same location from a leaking mast boot?
