Just Sold My Little Boat

I've sold my little 12 foot boat that I've known since the early 80s. Don't know exactly how I'm supposed to feel but am a little sad. I've had it rigged as a cat, as a spritsail sloop and as a regular sloop. I've had two different rudders and the latest being a kickup. Even installed a short bowsprit to give more room for a headsail. She has served me well as a fun platform to try different rigs, rudders and daggerboards and sailed well enough to beat one Flying Junior in a race long ago. Farewell "Orinoco."

Well I guess if it was for sale John then congrats are in order...but I know well the mixed emotions.

Your Hayfield sits by my feet as I type this and gives me a warm glowing feeling dreaming how its going to work just beautifully on Eagle Knight...Im sure the new owner of Orinoco feels 10 times that excitement so keep that as a good memory as well...your passing along joy to others John..

Very cute boat. You are right to be a little sad. Here's hoping she gives the new owner as much pleasure as she has given you.

Congratulations John!

Of course letting a wonderful boat go should be occasioned by an irish-style wake, given by one's fellow boaters. I wish I were there to buy you a drink, and ask how you rigged a bowsprit on such a pretty boat.

Aloha James,
Well, letting the little boat go means I have more time for the big boat. Still lots to do before it goes back in the water.
Thanks for all the kind words.
Amgine I did the bowsprit just like I'm going to do on the big boat to get the experience. Whisker stays, bobstay and a home built jerry rigged cransiron.
It was a fun experience putting "Orinoco" together using bits and parts from castaways. I did buy a new mast and wire and a used FJ main and jib. Daggerboard came from a Laser and rudder came from an Aquacat.

SkiprJohn,

I went the other direction--selling the "big" boat, so now I'm thinking about a small boat. Something like Orinoco might fill the bill. I need to find a boat that I can launch and recover by myself across a beach.

Great looking boat. But if you are not using it then you are right to move it on to others who may love it.

Original hull was of wood by L Francis Herreshoff and designed to be a dinghy for his Marco Polo. I stitched and glued foam over the original then glassed over it to do the hull. Surprisingly good little sailer.

Beach launchable.

Regards,

JohnL
