Just putin' it out there :)

I've had some great threaded conversations with some of you here at CF about our finally being ready to buy our boat!

I am now in the US and have been looking at a few fine vessels but thought that it would be silly not to just throw this out there to CF... just once

We're looking for a 37-41 foot sloop rig, GRP, 6' 2"+ head room in main areas, at this point I'm happy to trade performance for living area as we have a young son sailing with us, I like the idea of a separate parents aft cabin/stateroom scenario

We have a budget of about $80 - $90K including getting it ready to cruise back to Australia.

If anyone has been eying a great boat in their marina or know of someone looking to sell feel free to PM me.

OK that's it. Thanks in advance.

The U.S. is a pretty big place. Can you narrow your location down a bit?

If in or near Florida, the market is badly depressed, the panhandle and Miami look the best for a deal.

Hi,

There is a US boat sitting beside us in the Marina here in Malaysia that is well below your budget at $75,000.

She is a beautiful 42' Rhodes Bounty II

Steve and Linda are selling SV 'Linda' due to a death in the family and a need to return home. It is very unfortunate as the boat was provisioned and fueled and ready in all respects to leave for South Africa when this all occurred.
Despite her age sv 'Linda' is one of the cleanest and most well equipped cruising boats that you would find anywhere. I know it isn't in the US now but is certainly worth considering.
They have it listed here on Yachtworld. and they have a blog at sv Linda
If you were interested we can put you in touch with Steve and Linda direct.

You probably shouldn't spend more than 60 on the upfront purchase. The alternative is to wind up in Samoa with a nice view but flatarsed broke. Leave enough for the refit. Ignore the crap that brokers talk about "ready to go". EVERY old boat needs work.

The C & C line were always reliable production racers and very easy to convert to cruising. Same for the Cal series which isn't too different. Both have an aft bunk but no aft cabin. Both are super easy to sail and will get you across an ocean. I have done it in a Cal 39.

The Morgan series was more into full on cruising so they tend to be a bit heavier and slower. On the up side, they offer more room below AND this one has an aft cabin.

All of these are in California.

Hey the AUD just jumped up today so your budget just increased.
There are a lot of nice boats over there so fill your boots.
Just remember if you go to Florida you will have to pay to go through the cannal, but then you get the bonus of a nice sail to get there.

There is a lot to be said about the mid 80's Tartan 37's. What ever you buy, try to get one with fairly recent electronics, decent sails and a good quality, low hours diesel motor. Those are the items that can cripple a cruising dream...Good luck mate.

The Bill Garden Fast Passage 39 is a sweet , well built boat. Here's one in B.C.: 1980 Fast Passage Cutter - Boats.com and a general picture etc: http://sailboatdata.com/VIEWRECORD.ASP?CLASS_ID=2401
