Jib Furling Question

Hey folks,

I’m new to this forum and also new to sailing so I hope this is the right place to post this novice question.

Does anyone have tips on how to furl a jib tightly / neatly ? I find that sometimes after we furl our jib, It always looks fat and baggy on the roller furler even if there is tension while furling it.

Thank you

Re: Jib Furling Question

You only have two variables under your control: The angle to the wind when furling and the sheet tension.

In general, if you keep just a little bit of tension on the sheet the jib will furl neatly.

If you are way off the wind it can be tough to get a neat furl. Head up a bit as you furl and things will be neater.

Also depends on the lead angle of the sheet that you are tensioning to get a tight roll. Try experimenting with the position of your sheet fairleads, noting how the sail wraps on the foil.

Re: Jib Furling Question

If there is tension on the sheet and it is still baggy, you might check your halyard tension. If it is really loose, so will be the jib.

Re: Jib Furling Question

If you don't like the furl you get when "out there" wait til you get back to your slip or anchorage and do it when the wind is down.

If at first you don't succeed...

Re: Jib Furling Question

Start furling the jib in with one hand on the furler and one hand on the jib sheet. Then furl a bit and then give a nice tug on the sheet to tighten her up. Then repeat several more times, left hand, right hand. Nice and tight!
