Jerky Wheel Under Power With Catalina 30

Just purchased a 1980 Catalina 30. Have just noticed some kind of jerky feel in the wheel. Similar to the steering wheel when front tires are out of
balance in an automobile. More noticeable under more power. Anyone have any idea what could cause the problem. Have not had problems with steering.

Check cable tension. A combination of slackness and water flow/prop torque could be giving you that feedback effect

check quadrant is secure and all mounting points in the pedestal are tight

It is certainly easier to start with Blue Stocking's suggestions, as mine require a haul out or a swim.
If all above seems fine then a culprit could be engine alignment or your prop.
After that I guess you are left with the rudder attachment to the hull.
If you're going to dive & check the prop, though it works just the same hauled out, take something like a 2x4 to lay (or get fancy & clamp) against the hull to within a 1/4 inch of the prop, while you spin the prop (by hand-DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE). You can see some pretty insignificant bends with this simple device.

If under power it is likely a prop wrap. If not sailed/motored or cleaned in a while could be barnacles on the prop.

While you are looking at the steering components be sure to look at where the chain meets the wire rope in the pedestal. If you see broken strands/ frayed wire rope you are not far off from loosing steerage. This sometimes happens if the cog that the chain is on is allowed to cut into the wire rope. This can sometimes be the cause of slack in the cables, which could be causing whats going on.
