Jeff - ? on Hunter Cutter

Jeff, I read a post of yours the other day where you had some recommendations on "Classic plastic under 30k", and your #1 was the Hunter Cutter. Our broker has recently recommended these boats, so we have been looking, but your recommendation was for those boats built betweem 1970 and 82. I believe these were built unitl 1986, and the later ones (84 & 85 & think) had mid-boom sheeting, which we prefer. Did something change in '82 that makes your leary of the post-82 boats?

Thanks!

John

John,
I am by no means as knowledgable as Jeff ... but willing to bet that one of his comments will be gel coat formulation ... read "blistering".

Looking for Original Post

Chuckiebits - I did not see Jeff's post (or response) re the HC37 but after having reaserched everything I could find and going through the boat I certainly agree with his choice. I personally put the boat among the best (bluewater) choices under 40,000. We have just put an offer on one (79) and will be doing the survey this weekend. Could you give me the title of Jeff's original post, I would like to see his comments.?

Rob, I can't seem to find the specific article this morning, but if you do a search on "hunter cutter" in monohull sailboats forum you will find some of the comments.

I also did that same search on Sailnet, and found a number of interesting conversations (discussions) about the Hunter Cutter vs Tartan 37 vs Morgan 38

Lots of opinions, I am soooo confused!

Good luck!

John

It isn't hard to get confused

John - Thanks for the suggestion. If you are still looking for info or comparisons on the boats you mentioned (and a lot of others) you will find this site [URL=www.johnsboatstuff.com] helpful. It provides the technical design comparisons for 131 boats and was the basis of a Crusing World article "Choosing an affordable Offshore Crusing Boat". In the 50 to 75 thousand catagory only 9 boats meet all the criteria and the H37C is one of them. (and you can find a good one for considerablely less than 50) Anyway hope this helpful.
