In the Med, I would stick with a mobile device based on wifi to collect my wx. I know some such things can use mobile parallel network (3G, 4G?) that enable one to use the mobile parallel network (for mobile Internet access, as wifi is not equally popular everywhere). Both solutions work inshore only, but Med is basically inshore and if you receive your wx and your frcst before any passage, you should arrive fine.

Navtex is fine to have but it is an older technology and I would not use it as my only option. I found Navtex reception patchy too.

Voice (radio) should be enough, provided you speak the languages.

I hear there are many new 'no fishing' areas in the bay and further south that are marked by lights but not really shown on chart plotters with any clarity. They probably don't present any danger but a chum said it was very confusing when he came across them for the first time

I don't know about that but I have heard a couple of English boats getting stressed out with the flashing yellow strobe lights the fishing boats use... one put out a call to Finisterre Traffic that a boat was signaling Mayday..
Don't expect UK nav light standards once past Ushant..

Davits for the dinghy, good place to fit the solar panels on as well.
Do you have a freezer, if not, consider one of those 12V Waeco type boxes. Meant to be very efficient, its on my wish list

Hi Nigel, Do you mean a radar arch for the solar? I have davitts but not sure I could mount solar on them though you have me thinking now... ;-)

I have a set of davits mounted in the sugar scoop. A cross bar connects arcoss the top of the two davits, to which I fitted 2 x 135 Watt panels.
I dont have a picture of my davits, but I do have the pictures of the set up on a boat where I got the idea from. My set up is pretty much the same.
The clamps I got from the States, if you want the details, let me know

MIght want to look at your anchor. I believe the Jeanneau is either a Bruce copy (Lewmar) or a CQR. Others are probably better (read some of the MANY anchor threads ).

Have you got a liferaft?

Good dinghy/engine

Some sort of wake-up mechanism for the lone person standing watch at night. Many use an egg timer. There is a device called something like "Watch Commander". Cost a couple of hundred bucks, and is always counting. You push the button every 15-20 minutes and it stays silent. No push at the alarm goes off.

Nigel, That is a very slick setup and with your permission I am going to copy it shamelessly! As I said, I already have davits so not much work to do to get to the next stage. I have a friend who is a SS fabricator so will invite him out for a beer this week and take it from there. A friend in need is a pain in the neck LOL...

Carsten, Have a 27kg Manson. The Jeanneau item is a 20kg Delta which I didnt feel would be enough though it will be a solid kedge. Liferaft is in for service as I write and I have just lashed out on a new Honwave airdeck 2.7m and a Yamaha 6hp OB.

The Solar on Davits setup is superb... Why didnt I think of that???

With Davits and solar, just be sure the attachment points are strong, with good backing and that the GRP is good an solid, we had a Davit/ S Panels pulled out during a delivery when it got partly clobbered by a wave. This is especially true with the dinghy attached. But then youre not going through Biscay with a dinghy on davits right..


Sometime Davits just be bolted on without a lot of thinking being done.

To fix the boat in this case we had the whole transom reglassed with additional interior structs. Most yachts dont have proper support for davits , out of the box, IMHO

+A1... any passages carry the dink on the foredeck.. davits are great for what they do.. in limited conditions.. but at sea no matter how well you tie it on you'll start rub wearing the Hypalon and overstressing the davits... and its needless windage

I had planned to carry the dink deflated below decks while on a passage. Wherever it sits on deck or davit its a big wind sock and potential problem.

The davits bolt through the transom and have backing plates. Not a bad job really and I was quite pleased when I saw it... I have come to expect the worse whenever I take over someone elses projects! I am, among other things, a property developer and I am living in / refitting my last project now. Some people are just not safe when it comes to workmanship / standards...

You go ahead and shamelessly copy it, after all I did, and that was with permission of the owner. My davits have 3 anchor points, all with large stainless steel backing plates, in addition, I have wire stays from the davits to the the outermost part of the transom to give extra lateral support.

Found a picture of the davits on my boat, picture taken before solar installation and before I fitted the wire stays.
The cross bar is fitted using these


40mm saddle clamp, with the cross bar welded to one part of the clamp.
