Jeanneau Espace 1000 - Any Experience ?

Came accross these interesting boats that seem to have been built in the mid to late '80's. They are a 34ft deck saloon sloop that seem to just cram light and space inside, giving you a decent double with standing headroom amidships, conventional v berth to the front and a large open plan saloon/galley to aft with large windows and a second internal helm.



Seems like an ideal boat for someone like me making the transition from motor to sail, giving a nice balance of easy to manage size but still having a decent amount of space. Anyone have experience or opinions on them?



Also, how come there doesn't seem to be a newer equivilant? There are some makes of Deck Saloons in the 45ft+ range but I don't know of any in this size, were they not popular?

I have no personal opinion on this boat (seen one in a marina a few years ago, the owner was happy with it).

But My book (in French) about older sailing yachts says that it is a comfortable motor-sailer (architect: Philippe Briand), the hull is designed for sailing, the engine is powerful (30 to 60HP). On the centerboard version, a manual hydraulic ram is used to raise the centerboard. Even with a powerful genoa, it is slow in light airs; it is better suited to stronger winds, able to beat to windward without helping with the engine. Jeanneau built 228 of them.

It seems that motor-sailers went out of fashion 20 years ago in France.

Thanks for the heads up Salty, the Benateaus seem older so I guess they were the first to come up with the concept. Shame there's nothing similar a bit newer about but they do all look like great little boats to live aboard.

Nauticat is nice, but beefy. There are some listings here:

The slightly larger and newer Espace 1100 (motorsailer version of the Sun Fizz) was sailed around the world in the early 1990s by a Japanese guy, see:

I have been on board a couple, the central helm position appeard to work quite well and is near to the windscreen

There is not a lot on the web about any of the Espace models (660, 800. 990, 1000, 1100 & 1300) , but basic specs are at: Alize - Fantasia

My father has an espace 1000 and I have a moody 33, the espace beats it on every point of sailing and inside is like a luxury apartment. Great boat, is in no way like a motor sailor.
