Jeanneau 349 opinions? What are people saying?

Currently considering this new entry for 2014. It's at top of my list for a sub 35' monohull. Entry price of $125K US, could sail away at less than $150 I bet. Thoughts?

On my blog I have several entries about the boat with references to several boat tests made by French and Deutsche magazines.

Thx Pollux, your blog is one that I looked at but it's not easy to search. I will drill some more.

Are you dead set on new? The used boat market is a strong buyer's market and you can let someone else take the depreciation hit. You could either get more boat for your money or save a lot of money on the same size boat.

Jeanneau makes a good boat. Drive a hard bargain. Boat buyers are still a rare commodity these days.

No, not my first choice (new). Thx for the question and your point is well taken. With +70 boats out there now and daily production of two, there should be more than a few nicely equipped and fully tested 349 models available in my two year window.

Re: Jeanneau 349 opinions? What are people saying?

It is a lump of plastic with assorted made in China accessories. Exactly the same as its predecessors, albeit at a 35 a70 % price premium.

Just buy an older Jeanneau, Beneteau, Hanse whatever and spend 15k making it look and smell all lovely. It will be better than a new one that will require three to six months of snagging and waiting on repairs from the dealer.

Spend the 60 + k you save on recreational sex and good booze.

Jeanneau 349 opinions? What are people saying?

I was looking at a new 2013 Beneteau Oceanis 41. I found and bought a 2012 Jeanneau 44DS for the same price as the newer beneteau (after dealing them down $21,000 off asking) with more features like all electric winches with forward and reverse, the Bimini and dodger as well as 360 docking, 3zone A/C, cockpit cushions, extra fridge Onan Generator, etc. Plus in Louisiana, you don't pay tax on a used boat that is used for pleasure which saved me another $26,000. New this boat was $420,000 I saved $150k plus tax.

Fulmitz, that's quite a savings. And a great boat. I am going to take that route. Thx for giving the detail.

I'm not sure about your budget but on yacht world there are a bunch of Jeanneau 42 DS's between 2010 and 2011 that are $210-230k list but they've been on the market for a while. You could probably offer $20-30k below asking. Where r u located?

Re: Jeanneau 349 opinions? What are people saying?

My future location is east coast Florida. I need to investigate states tax positions regarding luxury items as you mention Louisiana doe so not tax private use. Would the tax break extend in yacht purchase to an out of state individual?

RK,

I believe it has to do with where you register the boat. There is no tax on a used boat for pleasure use in Louisiana. You would pay tax on a new boat in Louisiana. I also know about Florida as that is where I purchased my boat. In Florida you pay tax even on a used boat and they're very strict about that. Once my boat was purchased I had 10 days to get it out of Florida or pay Florida tax or I would be heavily fined and taxed and I was told arrested if I failed to comply. Florida has no state income tax so they make sure to get revenue from all other avenues. I paid $50 to the state of Florida which gave me a 90 day extension to take the boat home. Now I must send a form, with proof it's no longer in Florida, like a bill from filling with diesel fuel here in New Orleans.

Re: Jeanneau 349 opinions? What are people saying?

So I buy and register my next boat in LA, with my intent to use in a cruising fashion from There to east coast FL. Would I violate state tax law in either state?

Re: Jeanneau 349 opinions? What are people saying?

Depends how long you stay in Florida. Now your surpassing my level of knowledge. Again you don't have to buy the boat in Louisiana, just register it there. Like right now there is a jeanneau 42 ds for sale. You could buy there and register in Louisiana and sail to Florida, but your limited to how long you can stay in Florida... I think.
