I sail a 1981 model out of Kemah, TX. A former owner bought it in Marathon and sailed it here after living on it in the Keys and the Dry Tortugas for some time. He thought it was a fine cruising boat.

Our first boat was an Islander 30 Mk II (two boats and 20 years ago). The first owners had cruised it extensively on the west coast from Alaska to South America. We sailed it in the north west for about 8 years but the only ocean sailing we did was along the west coast of Vancouver Island. These were day sails only no overnight but we did see winds in the mid 20's with appropriate seas in the Pacific but the Straits of Juan de Fuca and Georgia gave us more wave action than the Pacific. The boat handled well and we never felt unsafe. By today’s standards the Islander 30 (at least the Mk II) was pretty simple (low tankage, no pressure water, one battery, etc.) but we spent up to three weeks at a time on it without problems. I always thought it sailed well for a production non-racing boat and actually did pretty well in the local beer can races (a Bahama was one of the top 25 boats in the north west racing fleet for several years). We turned the quarter berth into storage and even divided it to make a sealed propane locker so we could convert the stove from alcohol. We really liked the boat and remember it fondly.

Did you have any special equipment on it for navigation?

Hi Chula-

I have a 1982 Islander Bahama 30 and I am trying to find out what the recommended tension is on the shrouds. Sure, I can stand on the dock in front of the boat and eyeball the mast and spreaders for alignment- but I hoped that there was someone with some technical specs. I sail on an inland lake in Central Texas- Lake Travis near Austin, TX. The backstay is not split. I really enjoy the boat immensely- have had a series of Catalina 22's which I raced, but am now enjoying crising up the lake with my girlfriend, spending the weekend sailing, swimming, eating too much, and probably drinking too much as well :?). I've been slowly going over every system in the boat and I think I have everything working. I'm now in the midst of a complete interior wood revamp. I'm also looking for replacements for the cabin window glass. Got any ideas on any of this??

Replacing manual foot pump in galley

I need to replace the Whale Gusher manual foot pump in the galley of my boat. Anyone ever done this on an Islander Bahama before?
