Islander 28 Refit (propellor)

Hey Cruisers,

I will spare you all 37 items on the project list. Picked up a 68 Islander 28 for a "song" and now the dance begins.

I have to be out of the yard by the end of February. Sorry about the long post, next on my list is the prop. They say I want a 12x8 spun by my Yanmar 2gf20. I think there is room for a 14" prop and the book I bought encourages bigger diameters. Opinions?

The "must do before launch" (she's on the hard in Olympia WA) includes:
rewire mast
new compression post
bottom job (done, back nearly recovered)
engine check
stuffing box
impellor
propellor
alignment
rewire hull

propping a boat is a combination of art and science. The task is particularly difficult with sailboats because many people believe its ok and beneficial to over prop. The most correct way is described in one of the articles under Tony's tips at Seaboard marine or at boatdiesel.com. First the size of the prop has to be compatible with the room around it aperture or distance from hull too close will create problems. The proper pitch and blade surface is determined first by knowledgeable or computer guess work and then by sea trail. The prop should reach rated rpm+100 at WOT full loading 100%. All I can say is that I LOVE my MaxProp! Furthermore, they are sold by a company in Everett so you could easily drive up and pick it up.

Well I have a very similar boat, 29 Watkins, and my power is a 2 GM 20 Yanmar motor. I'm spinning a 14x14 2 blade RH prop and very happy with the performance and fuel economy if that helps.

You want 15% of the prop diameter clearance between the tip of the prop and the hull. So for a 12" prop about 1.75 inches. You probably wont be putting a Max Prop on as the prop will cost more than you likely paid for the boat! But definitely go for a 3 blade... Michigan Sailor or something like that. I would pitch it to max out at about 10% under max engine rpm... but if you find a prop that's close... try it.

Yes, I know what their address is. I have been there many times. As I said, I have a Maxprop and I got my radar mount and auto pilot drive unit from them. Specific street addresses aside, they are physically closer to Everett and/or Mukilteo than Lynnwood by a long shot.

So for those that go by street addresses - they are in Lynnwood (not actually in the city limits, just served by the Lynnwood post office). For those that go by general physical location - they are not actually in any city, but are very close to the cities of Everett and Mukilteo.

That being said, I am most honored to give a plug for PYI. *Every* time I have contacted them for any reason I have gotten more help that I could have hope for. They are truly wonderful people. If they sell a product I need, I wouldn't buy it anywhere else. Furthermore, I have found that their products are nothing short of top notch.

What is the gear reduction for the 2gf20 transmission? There should be a plate on the side of the transmission. From what little I could find on the internet, the diameter for the propeller would be 13 inches and the pitch maybe 10, but that appeared to be a real guess. I also saw 14X14 which is considerably bigger. What is the clearance between the propeller tips and the bottom of the boat? It should be 15% of the diameter of the propeller, from the tips of the blades to the bottom of the boat. Be aware that the minimum distance might not be straight up from the propeller tip to the bottom of the boat. If you are good with numbers, simple formulas, and graphs, get Gave Gerr's book Propeller Handbook, a very good book.
