Re: Island Packet Tank question

My IP 460 has fiberglass holding & water tank...aluminum diesel tank. Will last longer than me I think.

He did a great job and gave plenty of details about where to get parts. Sorry, I cannot remember his name.
About 10 years ago we were shopping and researching IP’s. There were a few discussions over in the IP owners forum about the water tanks also going bad from repeated chlorine treatments. Practical Sailor did an article about Aluminum tanks and talked about a well known brand needing lots of costly replacements.

Re: Island Packet Tank question

Most self respecting boat owners use charcoal filters when filling their water tanks. Those remove particles as well as chlorine from the water greatly reducing risk of an aluminum water tank failing. Also, if one cruises and employs a watermaker there is no chlorine in the water at all. So, I would say any concerns about aluminum water or diesel tanks are blown out of proportions. Holding tanks is entirely different matter due to corrosive action of salt water, urine, etc...

Re: Island Packet Tank question

In the middle of replacing the water tank on my ip 35. Aluminum goes bad that’s that it can oxidize itself outside but inside the tank it gets really funky. Yep it’s 10 k the liner and all get cut out. I’m putting in plastic w baffles. Also have to use 2 tanks so they will fit through the companionway. But like all things on boats you can patch it a hundred times or fix it once. That price also included all new water lines and of course new sole.
monel would be great but gold is cheaper

Re: Island Packet Tank question

My Island Packet holding tank failed. The tank was mounted across the entire forward stateroom. Removal of the old tank would require destruction of the berth. Instead I used a track saw to remove the sole and fiberglass to expose the top of the tank. I then removed much of the top of the tank, cleaned the bottom of the tank, put a layer of fiberglass cloth over the bottom of the failed tank, and then fitted a custom made fiberglass tank inside the old tank. The new tank has an access port and pressure relief valve. It has had no problems for 3+ years. The welded plastic tanks are an inferior option to fiberglass and could not have been used or fitted without maximal destruction to what was there, and could not be made fir the aperture available.

As far as water tanks go, i have inspected my water tank with a camera and it has no problems.

A holding tank should have 1 or 2 vents, never a pressure relief valve.

Re: Island Packet Tank question

I discussed the work that I did with no need to mention the vent system or other valves which were already in place and simply connected to the new tank.

The relief valve is in place if the vent fails. They are designed for holding tanks and chandleries focusing on these products sell them.

Re: Island Packet Tank question

I am concern about the lack of propane storage in the IP 420, for circumnavigation.
And also for fenders, liferaft, diving compressor, etc...
Any comments.
Thank You

I own an IP 420 and sailed her across the pond. Two 10 pound propane tanks were adequate, never ran out of propane, had the dinghy rolled up on deck, had the life raft mounted just in front of the mast. I keep a dive tank in the chain locker. I don´t have a compressor, but the lazarettes are huge. My fenders go in the lazarettes or forward in the chain locker. There is an enormous amount of space on that boat.

Re: Island Packet Tank question

Thank You.
I found two small propane tanks in a outside locker.
I had 4 twenty pounds on my cat , good for about 4 months.
Difficult to refill in the Pacific or Indian.
Almost impossible in certain countries( Morocco, Malaysia.
For long distances, 3 months of autonomy is a must.
Otherwise,my impression was certainly wrong.
