There are dozens of boats that would meet your criteria. Look at Southerly's 42RS, for example. It's simply a question of how much you are willing to pay.

Brand names can be thrown at you forever. What's important in your question is your budget for the boat alone. Not the refit, or adding equipment.......i2f

sail everything then figure out what you can tolerate. old , new--no big difference, as all must be worked on and fixed berfore a long passage anyway. there are just as many problems with brand new boats as with older ones.
there is no boat that will sail on paper. they sail on water. so-- go sail and see what you like.

Yes I read your post but it was not obvious to me exactly what you meant by that phrase. Regardless, boating is different for different people. Some are happy to go very basic, essentially camping out, with few ameneties but many do not.

Very aware of this. Have owned boats from 32' to 65' and know quite well the difference in costs to own, maintain and dock large vs small boats.

All boats involve trade-offs. There just does not seem to be a perfect one out there. Ours is a larger boat than you mentioned -- 16 meters or about 53-ft. Definitely built for ocean crossings and can be handled solo easily even if all the electric and hydraulic niceties fail and must be handled manually. There is a manual override for everything.

Our son recently visited us in Greece for a couple of weeks. He is 6 ft 6 1/2 inches tall and weighs just over 400 lbs. --- yes, that is not a typo. Over 6 1/2 ft tall and over 400 lbs. He fit in both our heads and showers with no problems. Plenty of headroom in the saloon and forward head and inside the aft head; he had to duck like everyone else in the passageway and when going through the 'submarine' doorways at the points of the watertight bulkheads.

Our boat is an Amel Super Maramu 2000, year model 2003. This is not an attractive boat but one we have been extremely comfortable living aboard full-time --- now in our 6th year. The aft cabin bed is what boat manufacturers call a queen size. In reality it is more like only a double or full size one would find in a home. Don't believe the manufacturer's literature claiming queen sized beds in boats. Check these out and you will find the beds are much smaller than what one is accustomed to in a home or hotel.

More importantly in your boat search, check out any prospective boat's engine room or engine compartment. Then check out the engine room on an Amel Super Maramu 2000.

How about a cat? Manta has 1 or more queen beds and are famous for their short handed sailing. It's not the only one. BOB

Folks that are 6' 2" and 250 lbs are not well suited to sailing in a 40 ft boat. Ever carry a 100 lb sack of cement around for awhile? That's what you are doing every minute of your life compared to that guy on the next boat that weighs 150 lb and is 5' 8". Big guys like us tire much more quickly when stressed and that can be trouble in a storm.
You can't change who you are and there are many advantages to being big, so just work with it. You will never be a jet pilot or rock climber. Try chartering different boats and get out there and push your endurance.
My solution was a large shrimp boat. I can put a 40ft sailboat into my main cabin and love the space.

Morgan 44 it has a bathtub and big bed aft. The prices have dropped about 50k since I have been watching them over the past 2 years and there are lots on the market that have been updated. There are 1990 under 100k these days, find a good one that need electronics and a bit of updating and add the stuff over time. I have seen several that lack nav gear but had new gen sets and AC, they have been used as condos for the last 20 years.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I have checked out a lot of the boats suggested on Yachtworld and spent many hours searching the forums and I think I have a possible candidate in a Gozzard. I might even be able to go to a 36 ft version, still have a back cockpit (a center cockpit really doesn't turn my crank) and yet have lots of sleeping room. I don't know about shower size but I really like the open plan setup.
Can anyone comment on how a Gozzard 36 handles in real life ?
