Re: Is There Snob Value in a Boat's Name?
Years back wife and I returning from a winter cruise in the Bahamas; pulled into Atlantic city ,anchored out side Farley marina and rowed into restaurant with our last few dollars. It was after dark and only one table occupied with six or so others dressed in evening wear. These folks were inordinately friendly and asked many questions about us as we took a table next to them. Friendly folks ,I thought. Questions turned to our rather tired 35' sail boat. They were effusive and I anticipated a round of drinks coming our way." Wait! we are not off that mega yacht with the helicopter on the stern that came in at the same time, we are off that little sail boat".
They turned as one and never spoke a word to us the remainder of evening.
I bought my own drinks.
Boat was named "Masquerade".

See, you jus never can tell.
I am NOT a $$$ rich person but I've met plenty. Some are just folks really, Some are total a'holes. Can't judge them jus cause they have $$, power, nice yacht, whatever.
Hell, I've even been snubbed here on CF.
If the global economy continues downward, These types may soon find themselves in situations they could never have imagined. Hopefully karma will apply where neccessary

I really am surprised at this ... we have people from all types of boats join us for drinks, a good laugh and a chat. I actually respect the guys with tiny boats who cross oceans without much nav equipment, water makers, money etc. ... I learn from these guys and we share life experiences at sea ... Judgement? ... never crossed my mind!
I never feel judgement toward anyone on a boat, nor have I felt judged. Recently I was in Antigua and had some wise crack from a guy about being a cat sailor ... one of my guests who is a mono sailor got hugely upset with him (I was surprised) ... to me the guy was just 'having me on' and I saw it as a joke.

The wise sailor knows that there is always someone with a bigger more expensive boat and someone with a smaller cheaper boat, and that boat size and cost are insignificant when compared to the character of the boat's owner.

I used to get a lot of respect in races. Fast guys with boats put away would line the rail of the bar and record my finish time. Then the committee took 9 minutes off my PY and no one watches any longer and I get 5ths and 8ths instead of 3rds and strikes...
The only Maxi in Singapore with an 86 PY. I thought they were supposed to handicap boats not crews...
OK rant over I'm going back to one designs...

A woman visiting my yacht club asked what sort of boat I had, and I answered that it was a Hunter 46. She suddenly found me quite attractive. She apparently thought I'd answered, "A hundred forty-six."
Yikes.

Re: Is There Snob Value in a Boat's Name?
The only snobbery I've found, is who has been to the most places under own keel. But then I avoid the more exclusive Yacht clubs.

Of course... Hence the creation of the bumper sticker ," My OTHER CAR is a fill in the blank"...
made from 1912-1919...
