Is a 44 Bavaria suitable for sailing in rough seas?

Been looking for a good passage making boat, but many factors I don't know.

This one is in good shape and well equipped, well furnished and looks clean.

A survey will show if everything is right with it,

but meanwhile, I'm trying to find out if a Bavaria boat hull is good and strong enough for say, sailing to and all around NZ, for example...

I don't have any experience with them, but you might check with the folks at the social group here:

Good luck!

Re: Is a 44 Bavaria suitable for sailing in rough seas?

Some of the older ones are not great sailers, but they are well built, and there are a few sailing around here in NZ. The later model ones designed by Farr are good...

Re: Is a 44 Bavaria suitable for sailing in rough seas?

Thanks guys!

Its a 2002, not sure if it was designed by Farr, but I can ask

Or not, cause it seems very hard to get live responses from yacht selling sites.

Its almost like they put up their boats and then forget about the whole affair.

Even a broker took almost 2 weeks to send some pictures he should have put up on the web in the first place.

It seems to be similar with cars - online car markets, I get a response from maybe one in 10 messages I sent, asking about availability. The one reliable factor are the scammers always answering - they'll be in a foreign country with a car from your country, and they'll want to use a phoney transport company to send it to you, upon which you'll have between 4 hours and 4 days to decide if you like the car.

The hitch is, you're supposed to pay half the price in advance to the shipping company, which will hold it in escrow. right...

I wonder if this forum has a post on common scams with boats some place...
It always helps to know the angles ahead of trying to make a purchase.

Seems they are a J&J Design with a limited 2 year run.. also a minus factor for me is the Saildrive.

We re done the rig in a 44 2 years ago for a young couple from NZ,, they sail the boat from SXM to Nz and today they are still doing trips around those waters, OZ Nz , so enough for me to agree they can sail in rough weather.

If it seems fishy, don't touch it. Your instincts are correct.

Re: Is a 44 Bavaria suitable for sailing in rough seas?

Definitely J&J, Farr came into the game after 2004.

Boats which are not amongst the first 25-30 numbers of the model year usually hold up better as early production adjustments are done by then.

Consider this: the Bavaria claim to fame is that they cost less because they can knock one out faster than any other similar sized boat. Mostly built by robots. Think about that while you're bashing around Stuart island.

Think about what?

Efficient production?

The fact that machines don't come to work hungover or have bad days and so produce similar quality work day after day?

QC is still performed by humans so defects 'should' be picked up rather than covered up?

I'm just not sure what your point is?

Re: Is a 44 Bavaria suitable for sailing in rough seas?

I've been looking at buying a Bavaria under 40ft.
Apparently all Bavaria's since 2004 and under 42ft were made with sail drives only.
The older Carabic and Lagoons were built like tanks with huge cleats and plenty of fibreglass.
Bavaria went through some management changes late 90's and into the early 2000's and built quality suffered at the time. Things have picked up since and the newer boats are used in huge numbers in the charter market in Greece & Croatia.
They're not the best quality but they are better than the likes of Beneteau etc.

Can you elaborate please? It's a big statement and clarity would help.
