Is a 36 Islander a Seaworthy Boat?

Hi all, anyone out there know about 36 islanders. I know it has a skeg mounted rudder and keel stepped mast. But unsure of the rest. Help please, were going up to seattle to look this weekend. Thanks, you guys rock!

Re: is 36 islander a seaworthy boat

Well, I saw one out on Great Hook Island, they must have sailed there. They were planning to sail back to Chesapeake. So may the boat was seaworthy.

Zac Sunderland sailied an Islander 36 aroung the world with no major problems. The boat is seaworthy enough to circumnavigate or take it wherever you want to go. Look up Zac Sunderland on Google to learn about his trip and modifications done to his Islander. Hope this helps.

I have sailed on one many times. My friend owns one here in The SF bay area.I was steering thru "the slot" 35knts steady gusting to 40 1 reef in the main and a #2 genoa. To me,she seemed very solid,Nice motion in the chop, not to wet and fast.Faster than I thought she would be.The layout below is spacious pretty well thought out. There are some deals on them here in the Sf bay area to.Check out latitude38.com .

I know the surveyor for my boat (unrelated to the I36) mentioned something about some potential crack on the hull around the mast step on the I36.

I really do not know the boat at all so someone else that knows could comment on that.

No idea about built quality but the design looks very seaworthy.

Re: Is a 36 Islander a Seaworthy Boat?

The keel stepped mast has little to do with its offshore capabilities. It's really easy to get rid of the wheel if the boat has one. As far as the rest of the boat's capabilities, they are as good, if not better than other California boats of that era. Thought about buying one but couldn't come to an agreement on price. Boat had been sitting in slip for years and had almost no equipment, just original working suit of sails and no roller furling. IIRC, we backed out when they wouldn't go below $23k. I could see putting an easy $15k in her to go anywhere and there were a ton of ,boats available under $40k.
