To Rick (KK5RX) about Irwin
I had seen the same Jack Hornor review online some time back. Mr. Hornor's information about the Irwin
34 liferails is severely flawed. While the stanchions are indeed held down with screws, that is not where they gain their strength. Unlike most liferail stanchions, which are bolted down using a tripod-like base, the Irwin design has the stanchion post protrude below the stanchion base into a socket bored into the ash wood deck
framing which is laminated by the fiberglass
decking. The result is strength which is superior to the regular tripod base. You can find diagrams of this on the Irwin website www.irwinyachts.com
I have to wonder how much of Mr. Hornors other opinions are so poorly researched.
