I owned one till last week! Took us up and down the whole East Coast and through the Bahamas without a care. Nice, roomy, comfortable, good sailing and under power but it IS a production boat much like Hunter/Bene/Cat/ o'day etc and I would not consider it a bluewater boat. A great coastal cruising/liveaboard value. The motorized stern swim/dive/dinghy platform is pretty kewl too!
Due to the age...you'll find these in a wide variety of price ranges and condition....some are a LOT better than others.

Because it is not built to do that. Go ofshore in a gale and big seas and you will understand why. You can do whatever you want but I owned one and YOU asked for advice. Look at a different boat if you want to cross an ocean.

Ok yea, but why? Not enough keel? To thin fiberglass? Why? There is a lot of boats not built to go across oceans but they do. Not that I am going to do that. Just wondering. Thanks.

The necessary structural rigidity and beefiness is not there.

I asked the same question on the cruiser log forum, I was told to stay away from the 44 Irwin They had a keel problems and some structural as some workers making off with materials while being built and the boats were suffering and would not point into the windward [That post came from a Irwin employee so he says,Also I even had a lady email me relating her concern they spent a summer on one in the Caribbean they could wait to get rid of it,
I was told to look at a 44 or 45 Gulf star the 44 is almost the same as the Irwin both designed by Hirsh but with a different builder, I have been on a 45 Gulf star and it even feels solid with good gear.
