Interior wood refinishing

My boat was rain flooded during a one year storage in a Florida marina. The bottom 8 inches or so at all interior wood shows water staining. The wood had been finished with an undetermined clear something by one of the previous owners-neither one admits to it. I am now in the process of sanding all of the wood in the interior, and thought about re-finishing with clear semi-gloss polyurethane. Does anyone know of a more water resistant material ( just in case ) that I may opt for.

Don't know of any kind of paint or varnish that will survive flooding.

You might be better off to seal the wood and paint it, because usually the veneer is really thin, and sanding is likely to go through.
