I need to replace my.... thing?

i have a stern pulpet, or some such thing.
the wood is rotting.
bolts on with two bolts. but what about the rigging?
can i just unhook it for a week at dock?
or do i need to run the hallyard down and hold it in place that way?
does it need to be wood? or can i have the welder fab it up in aluminum?

and what is it called?

looks like a load bearing spreader bar for your mizzen backstays,so any replacement needs to be structrally sound enough to take the loads imposed on it by the mizzen,all the other attachments are purely surplus to its pupose

so how does oak hold up in a marine environment?

I read somewhere that Red Oak is bad. I also recall White Oak was "OK" if properly treated. Gougeon Bros. Book might shed some light on your project. It is on their website for free download:

oak is good,but will discolour around metal fastners

Me would rig a halyard just in case - especially if the Mizzen used as a "perch" for a radar or windvane.

For replacement my natural inclination would be for s/s ($$$), but failing that I think aluminium would be ok (a decent thickness and some form of box or even a girder?! shape) - my thinking is that the strength in the current arrangement comes from the pull from below and not from either the material itself (apart from for the fixings) nor from the hull fixing (primarily in compression?).

Of course I am no rigger nor structural engineer - hence my comment that me would favour s/s!

BTW, in the second pic I am curious as to why a hatch appears to be there? Does it lead to the head?!

In those 2 new pics the "hatch" is not there - but nor is the bar it sits on!, at least it does in the second pic in your original post (at the top - it's wood and has slats).

Seeing those pics a thought has occurred to me, that mizzen is a decent way forward (she is not a Yawl!) is the bar really needed? (obviously depends on Mizzen Height, at 53' of boat likely it goes up a bit! - and probably other stuff to think about!) - but if a retro fit by a PO perhaps he simply got enthusiastic? Just a thought.

i had wondered that myself.
i cant for the life of me figure out what the two solid loops are on the stern by the steps are. perhaps where is was originally rigged?
of course, there are many mystery's i find every day on this yacht.

and i think my height above the water is 55'. both mast are the same height.
