I just bought a sailboat!
Hey All!!
My wife and I just bought a 1978 Crysler 22 sailboat. My wife found the boat on the facebook marketplace, which showed pictures and appeared as if it needed some work. We made a $500 offer that was accepted. We now have the boat in our yard on a trailer, and we are both really excited to start working on it soon.
First thing I want to do is strip the paint and repaint it. The trailer I have isnt the best, and I was thinking of getting jack stands, but not sure where to get them for this boat.
If you have any ideas or suggestions, please let me know.
Thanks all

Congratulations on your new arrival. Give it lots of love. You should have many years of enjoyment with it. I hear the are good boats. Go through the trailer really well. Brakes, springs and especially wheel bearings.

I would not strip and paint it.
Do the compound / wax thing after you check the rigging, keel and rudder.
Then go sailing.

This! Just do enough to make the boat safe. The more time you spend "restoring" her the less time you will have for fun!

Re: I just bought a sailboat!
Well it has barnacles all over it and the bottom coat is wearing pretty bad so I at least need to repaint it ... I need an outboard ... maybe some new lines/rigging but not sure yet. Maybe a few small hardware pieces but overall the boat is in decent shape for sailing.
Disclaimer: I have owned a sailboat before but never sailed and I don't know how to.

Congratulations! That design sails really, really well. Much better than their size might imply, & in heavy air, or little at all.

Where are you located? Probably lots like me who have a set of stands collecting dust in their back yard you could borrow.

Re: I just bought a sailboat!
Google marine jack stands and you can find some but they might cost you more than you paid for the boat.
Don't waste money painting a $500 boat more than doing bottom paint.
Clean it up and go use it. As stated, check the rudder and everything out of the water before you launch her.

Re: I just bought a sailboat!
Scrub it good and use it a bit. Then decide about painting. Painting it is a huge task. The Chrysler 26 is a great boat, hopefully the 22 is too.

Re: I just bought a sailboat!
Get yourself 4 55 gallon drums and some blocks of wood.
Lower the trailer in the front as low as you can.
Use 2 drums and blocks of wood to support the stern
Raise the trailer in the front so the stern of the boat is off the trailer and supported by the drums and blocks.
Block the boat as far forward as you can w the other drums and blocks of wood.
Lower the trailer and slide it out from under the boat.
You might want to add a block or two along the keel for added support.
Reverse process to put it back on the trailer.

Best of luck! She is old but they did make a good boat. Probably trailered so blisters and the age probably won't be a problem. Enjoy!
