Re: Hunter vs Catalina - Please Help

Raced to Hawaii in 2011 and had a well sailed Cat 42 in our class. She would not have been fun to drive in the Molokai Channel with a tiller.. I grew up on tillers since 1965. a 40++ foot boat with a tiller can be a bear to drive, off the wind and in a big sea way. Check the quadrant, cables and have spares but a wheel is far more easier for most people to drive. Especially for a longer period than 3-4 hours... just sayin'..

BTW the Cat 42 kicked the entire Aloha fleet's butt when they dove south early.

The one you identify as the Catalina can not be Catalina 27 of the vintage we are talking about... If it is a Catalina head, the photo is probably depicting something newer, 1982 -1986.

I don't think that's how the head came off the line on the Hunter. Teak trim is nice, but the absence of it does not mean inferior construction. It might well mean that the purchaser's money went into something more important and substantial. Just sayin' ...

My head (1983), which is original, looks like the Catalina, except it doesn't have teak trim. It does have a teak drop down shower seat, and is about the same size (TEENY!)

I looked at a 1983 Hunter Cherubini and wanted to buy it just for the spacious head. Unfortunately the owners had not taken good care of it, and it was a "problem child" boat. Sigh ...

The Cherubini I looked at could have been one sweet boat! But the oil was as thick as peanut butter (that's not an exaggeration), and the wooden gussets were so dry-rotted from leaks where the shrouds entered the boat that you could poke your finger right through them. In addition the owner had bought upscale laminated sails. They were only about a year old but were already moldy between the layers -- and were starting to delaminate.

Sweet boat to sail, but had some serious issues.
