Hunter sailing question

This may be obvious to many but not to me....say your approaching a dock under mainsail..at a shallow angle..and want to release the main to stop/slow the boat...seems like the aft rigging is going to prevent the sail from extending to the point where it is no longer powered...???

Re: Hunter sailing question

That's one of many ideas of why using a mainsail to approach a dock is not the best idea. Unless the widn direction is cooperating, and you didn't say.

Dock: I use the jib, main is dropped.

Anchor or mooring buoy a main is fine, 'cuz you're going into the wind.

Re: Hunter sailing question

We sailed to the dock on my first lesson. We used the main because the wind was light and from the stern. The instructor released the halyard before we turned 90 degrees. When we made our turn the main sail dropped on its own and we coasted to the slip.
