Hunter Cherubini 33 Trade

Just traded a 15 hp Evinrude 76 model for an h33 Cherubini. The motor was given to me so basically I got this boat free. Owner paid liveaboard for a month and gave me $20. Anyway, the transom is damaged and small hole on side of the cabin. Any advice on the repair of this transom?

Re: Hunter Cherubini 33 Trade

Thought I was in trouble. No response here at all. I did run across a website that has been a lot of help in planning the kind of transom repair I need. The website talks about transom extension and retrofitting older boats. All the details of mockup and layup of the transom are covered in some detail and I would recommend looking at htttps://www.boatdesign.net/threads/transom-extension.51857/. Still waiting for input here also.

Hi Ahab,
The boat design forum and the wooden boat forum have some experienced builders. There are good YouTubers as well. I'm using my phone, but I'll try to find a link when I'm back on the computer. Also, ask around the marina who the most knowledgeable repair guy/gal is. You'll find someone there who's already done this work before. Good luck!

Re: Hunter Cherubini 33 Trade

The Cheribuni 33 is fundamentally a good boat, but obviously this one needs some serious work. Find a good glass guy (not some hack) and get the transom repaired properly. Afterall, you spent basically nothing on it so spend a little to get her back in proper shape. If you are unable/unwilling to do that then you are probably better off to pass her on.

Only the deck is cored, the hull I believe was solid glass on all the Cherubini Hunters. So, its a pretty straight forward repair.

Check out the deck, especially around any deck fittings. A boat in that poor of shape I would expect to have some wet core too.

Wow, that poor boat

Check out forums.sailboatowners.com/index.php?forums/the-cherubini-hunters.44/

I second the guy who said to get a good glass guy to at least look it over and give some suggestions.

I do glasswork, and that boat can be saved, but it will be pretty expensive. I think you would have to weigh what the boat would be worth in good condition, versus the repair cost. Thats a shame, it would be an awesome cruiser.

No there is a hole on the port cabin side about 6 inches. Plus a few rub rashes. Standing rigging was unaffected and all stanchions and lifelines were removed prior to the storm. Rigging will be double checked anyway, especially the chainplates. Steering is all intact as well.

Im thinking youd be money ahead to buy another intact hull with a crap mast and shot engine. Move the goodies from the bad hull to the good one.

Actually the repair will not be that difficult according to the thread I posted earlier.

Assuming no other damage related to the all-but-missing transom, I would think cutting out the rest of any unsound glass, grinding back a proper taper to bond, and laying up a whole new transom should (theoretically) pretty simple.

It doesn't look like there are many compound curves in that area as a hull side would have. And even if you got the transom shape "wrong" - but it was sound and halfway decent looking - would it matter?

Then again, I tend to look at most things as "repairable" if the rest of the item is worth the effort.

I'd grab out my Don Casey book, open a West Systems account, and get to work.

Chamfer down the edges (shallow) all round the area to be repaired then screw a piece of ply to the interior section your repairing.. then start building it back up with layers of glass and polyester/epoxy.. its no different to filling in a smaller 6" hole.. if its all cleaned and prepped right your good to go.
Just my 0.000001 cent.
