Hunter 45cc: Good for Mexico to Alaska ?

I am contemplating purchasing a Hunter 45 center cockpit or salon. at the present I am not experienced enough and will stay in the Florida/Bahama waters till capable but will eventually want to sail to Alaska which is where my home is. Is the Hunter 45 with shoal keel a capable, safe, comfortable boat to sail from Mexico to Hawaii then to Alaska?

Oh oh, here we go... Everyone here will confirm that this is a very loaded and open question. I've seen tons of people sail the widest ranges of boats that other will NEVER touch and they all do fine. You just have to make sure that you are capable and everything has been done or prepped right.. I know tons of people with Hunters and they love them and have sailed all over the world..

good luck with your purchase though...

If you really like that boat, based on your cruising plan I suggest you hold off and look for a deep keel. Otherwise, that hull is built like a tank. The aft cockpit version of that same hull is the 460/466/46. It will outperform the 450, but isn't quite as roomy.
cruising is entirely about showing up--in boat shoes.

There is a handle on CF by the name 'Sequitur' if I am not wrong. He has sailed to Patagonia in his Hunter 49. I don't remember the thread but guess it was one of those Hunter bashing ones. :-).
